  • Take Up Your Cross - Psalm 22 - Brent Van Sickle - Advent: Cradle, Cross, Crown, Coming

How do you handle suffering? It can be tempting to let hardship overcome us, but it doesn't have to be that way. In this Advent message, Pastor Brent takes us through Psalm 22 where we learn about the context of the Psalmist David in the midst of his suffering, and how fulfillment is ultimately found at the cross of Jesus Christ. The call to action for everyone is to take up our own cross and follow Jesus!

    -----------------------------------------

    Psalm 22

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.

3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praisesa]">[a] of Israel. 4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 "He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!"

9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother's breasts. 10 On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother's womb you have been my God. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.

12 Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; 13 they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; 15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feetb]">[b]— 17 I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! 21 Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescuedc]">[c] me from the horns of the wild oxen!

22 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: 23 You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. 26 The afflictedd]">[d] shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. 28 For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. 30 Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; 31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.

  • Life in Light - Isaiah 9:2-7 - Austin Glenn - Advent: Cradle, Cross, Crown, Coming

Life is hard. Sometimes it feels like we are surrounded by gloom or darkness. It feels like the harder we try to fix things, the darker they get. This is exactly where the people of Israel found themselves almost 3000 years ago. They were held in Assyrian captivity and everywhere they turned, their life was filled with distress. It was in this environment that Isaiah declared, "Your gloom will be no more, a light is coming!" During the Advent season we look back and recall the glorious truth that a light has come to make it possible to have darkness removed. And the light will return to eradicate the darkness all together.

Listen to this teaching from King's Cross Church and find out how to have the darkness lifted in your life.

    --------------------------------------

    Isaiah 9:2-7

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be uponb]">[b] his shoulder, and his name shall be calledc]">[c] Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  • Living a Life of Meaning - 2 Timothy 4:1-22 - Brent Van Sickle - Jesus & His Church

Do you want your life to mean something? Do you ever wonder about the legacy you will leave, or what others will say about you when your time on this earth has come to an end? While most people prefer not to think about the end of their lives, it is important to let the legacy we want to leave drive the decisions we make today. In this teaching from 2 Timothy 4, Pastor Brent uses Paul's last words to Timothy to guide us in the steps we can take to ensure we are living a life of true meaning--one that is focused on the Lord.

    -------------------------------------------

    2 Timothy 4:1-22

    Preach the Word

1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

    Personal Instructions

9 Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

    Final Greetings

19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.

22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.

  • Rest in Right Affection - 2 Timothy 3:1-17 - Austin Glenn - Jesus & His Church

If someone asked you to list the things in life that you love the most, what would you say? Would you answer honestly or in the way you think you are "supposed to?" While there is nothing wrong with loving your family, your job, your home, and so on, loving those things more than you love the God who created them will always lead to satisfaction that doesn't last.

In 2 Timothy 3, Paul writes about the difficulties brought about by disordered affections, and the antidote for the brokenness we experience daily. Listen to this teaching to learn how you can reorient and reignite your affections for Jesus.

    ------------------------------

    2 Timothy 3:1-17

    Godlessness in the Last Days

1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  • Having a Non-anxious Presence - 2 Timothy 2:14-26 - Austin Glenn - Jesus & His Church

In a world that seems filled with chaos and unrest, do you find yourself succumbing to anxiety or standing calm and steady? It can be all too easy to slip into a pattern of worry and stress, or even to contribute to the cultural turmoil around us.

In 2 Timothy 2:14-26, Paul continues his letter to Timothy by describing the actions Timothy should take to be a non-anxious presence to others--to be a worker approved by God. Listen to this teaching to learn how you can embrace God's desire to use you as a beacon of peace, hope, and contentment that others are drawn to in his name.

    --------------

    2 Timothy 2:14-26

14 Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity."

20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.

22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

  • Overcoming Imposter Syndrome - 2 Timothy 2:1-13 - Austin Glenn - Jesus & His Church

We all know the feeling: we walk into the meeting, the classroom, the get-together and think, "How long until they know I'm fraud?" That inner critic loves to tell you that you're not good enough, not strong enough, not smart enough, not Godly enough.

Imposter syndrome is that self-doubt that causes us to shrink back and miss out on the great things God has for us. This is not a new phenomenon. In the New Testament, we see that Timothy struggled with imposter syndrome and in 2 Timothy 2, Paul writes to Timothy and offers an antidote. Listen to this teaching to learn how you can overcome imposter syndrome.

    ----------

    2 Timothy 2:1-13

1You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for:

If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—

    for he cannot deny himself.

  • Confession: Living Life in the Light - 1 John 1:8-2:2 - Brent Van Sickle - Formation Sunday

Does the thought of telling someone about your sins make you anxious? Confessing our wrongdoing can feel vulnerable and scary, whether we are confessing to God or to others. In this text, John explains that we are all sinners, but that our gracious and merciful God made a way for us to be cleansed of that sin--Jesus! In this teaching, we learn how confession allows us to be in relationship with God, and how it allows our relationship with God to flourish. We also learn some practical tips for engaging in confession with those around us.

    1 John 1:8-2:2

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

  • Faith Over Fear - 2 Timothy 1:1-18 - Austin Glenn - Jesus & His Church

What do you fear? Sickness? The endangerment of loved ones? What your future will be like? Every single one us falls victim to fear. And this is only exaggerated during periods of suffering. In this text Paul is writing at his lowest low, on death row, and yet he is not afraid. What gives Paul this unshakable security? In this teaching we see how we can grow in faith instead of fear during seasons of difficulty.

    2 Timothy 1:1-18

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You 3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me. 13 Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

15 You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.

  • Life of Great Gain - 1 Timothy 6:3-21 - Austin Glenn - Jesus & His Church

We are all on path chasing out what we believe to be the good life. Some of us will spend our whole lives in pursuit of the goodlife and never actually obtain the life we desire. Others will reach their goals only to realize that not everything that glitters is gold. So then what? Do we start over? Do we set more goals? Do we work and strive to achieve this version of life that we think we want? The good news is that we don't have to be caught up in this cycle of striving and let down. In 1 Timothy 6:3-21, Paul discusses the life of great gain--the good life. And he shares how this good life is attainable. Listen to this teaching to discover how to lean into the life that you may not even know your heart is longing after.

  • Jesus the Liberator - 1 Timothy 6:1-2 - Brent Van Sickle - Jesus & His Church

Does the Bible endorse slavery? No! The Bible clearly states that all people are made in the image of God with inherent worth, dignity, and value. Slavery was a byproduct of sin and throughout the Bible we see that God is a liberator. In this passage we see Paul providing instructions for how bondservants ought to act in their service. This wasn't and endorsement of slavery. Paul says that bondservants should honor their masters. If this is true of bondservants in slavery what should our attitude be like in difficult circumstances. In this sermon we see that Jesus is our liberator and that our service is our sermon.
