  • Episode 5: Birthday Parties

Listen in as we navigate the tumultuous decision-making process surrounding my daughter Harper's upcoming fourth birthday party. Despite my initial reluctance to host a party this year, my sister and godmom have convinced me otherwise. The debate revolves around the idea of celebrating every year versus marking only significant milestones, balancing the party options between Harper's summer birthday and my son Jackson's winter birthday, and the impact of my husband's basketball career on our family celebrations.

In this lively discussion, we also explore Harper's character-themed party plans featuring the Princess Isabella's sisters. We grapple with the pressure exerted by social media to throw extravagant parties and ponder over alternative celebration options like donations to Harper's education fund in lieu of gifts. As we exchange thoughts on gifting experiences over parties, we also consider what Harper and Jackson's future milestone birthdays might look like. Join us as we traverse this intricate maze of parenting decisions and familial debate, aiming to strike a balance that honors each child's unique needs and desires.

  • Episode 3: Disciplining Children

Growing up, my mother never spanked me. It was a conscious decision that has shaped my own beliefs about parenting and discipline. In this intimate conversation, we dive into the world of non-physical discipline, exploring its impact on child rearing. We talk about the potential negative effects of physical discipline and the fear it can instill in children. Through personal anecdotes, we shed light on how choosing not to spank has shifted our perception of parenting and discipline.

The journey continues as we explore the concept of "gentle parenting." Defined by its four cardinal points - empathy, respect, understanding, and boundaries - this approach puts the focus on nurturing desirable qualities in our children. We discuss setting and enforcing consistent boundaries and the power of effective communication. Our conversation reveals that parenting is not a one-size-fits-all solution and how important it is to recognize each child's individuality.
Lastly, we delve into the essence of emotional regulation and its impact on our kids’ ability to manage distress. We underscore how parental interaction shapes a child's behavior and the critical role it plays in their emotional well-being. Hear from us as we share strategies to guide both ourselves and our children towards healthy emotional regulation. This episode offers a refreshing perspective on child-rearing, one where discipline goes beyond punishment, rooted in respect and understanding. Tune in and join us in this enlightening discourse.

As mom and grandma, Allison and Cyndi have been on a journey of discovery, exploring these questions and more, as they grapple with their daughter/granddaughter, Harper's struggles with perfectionism and potential anxiety issues.

Reflecting on their own childhoods, they understand how important it is to be vigilant about the signs and symptoms of anxiety in children, which can manifest in many ways - from obsessive worry to safety concerns. As parents, we've got a major role to play in validating their feelings, providing reassurance, and teaching the art of mindfulness. They've found that by reframing their own thinking and reducing their own anxiety, they can help their children cope better. But it's crucial to remember - it's okay to seek professional help.
They've also explored various coping strategies for children and delved into the potential benefits of therapy. Allison and Cydni have discovered the Mightier app that offers great strategies for kids to cope with anxiety, an excellent tool in their parenting toolbox. Therapy isn't just for adults - it can be hugely beneficial for children too, especially those grappling with anxiety and feelings of perfectionism. Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery”): the time-honored Japanese art of repairing broken pottery using lacquer mixed with gold to highlight the beauty of imperfection.

Formerly The Duo, Kintsugi Conversations is a weekly podcast hosted by mother-daughter duo, Cyndi Mathis Louis and Allison Mathis Jones, aimed at impacting generational legacy in the spirit of kintsugi.

Cyndi published her first book, Missing Pieces, in 2010 and is a motivational speaker, philanthropist, and coach for moms looking to build and maintain amazing relationships with their children and passionate about using her voice to tell the stories of the hundreds of men, women, and children who would otherwise not be heard. Cyndi is also a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a friend, and someone who was lucky enough to find love and remarry after the devastating loss of her first husband. She grew up with a turbulent relationship with her mother and a non-existent relationship with her father. When she had her own daughter some years later, she knew that she wanted their relationship to be different. Now that the two have a unique and deep bond, they have set out to share their special relationship.

Allison is the woman behind allisonmathisjones.com where she shares her motherhood and lifestyle journey. She’s wife to DeQuan and mama to Harper and Jaxon. She also has her masters in marriage and family counseling and is dedicated to helping millennial individuals and couples to plan, adapt, and ultimately, flourish. While living in Japan, Allison learned of the art and mindset of kintsugi and began to apply this restoration technique to all aspects of life. After being diagnosed with and having surgery to remove a brain tumor, Allison wrote a children’s book, The Kintsugi Kid to inspire even the youngest to embrace their brokenness.

Cyndi and Allison share an extra special relationship and are passionate about helping other mother-daughter duos to not only accept their differences, but embrace them. The pair aim to bring light to the generational legacy they are building through candid conversations about current parenting points in the spirit of kintsugi. We can all turn our messes into messages and are each more valuable when repaired with care than we were before we were broken.
