    عید  ہے  قتل  مرا  اہلِ  تماشا  کے  لیے

    سب  گلے  ملنے  لگے  جب  کہ  وہ  جلّاد  آیا

    چین  کرتے  ہیں  وہاں  رنج  اُٹھانے  والے

    کام  عقبیٰ  میں  ہمارا  دل  ناشاد  آیا

    دی  شبِ  وصل  موذن  نے  اذاں  پچھلی  رات

    ہاے  کم  بخت  کو  کِس  وقت  خدا  یاد  آیا

    ۱۴

    میرے  نالے  نے  سنائی  ہے  کھری  کس  کس  کو

    منہ  فرشتوں  پہ  یہ  گستاخ  یہ  آزاد  آیا

    ۱۵

    غمِ  جاوید  نے  دی  مجھ  کو  مبارک  بادی

    جب  سنا  یہ  کہ  اُنہیں  شیوۂ  بیداد  آیا

    ۱۶

    میں  تمنّائے  شہادت  کا  مزا  بھول  گیا

    آج  اس  شوق  سے  ارمان  سے  جلاد  آیا

    شادیانہ  جو  دیا  نالہ  و  شیون  نے  دیا

    جب  ملاقات  کو  ناشاد  کی  ناشاد  آیا

    لیجئے  سنئے  اب  افسانۂ  فرقت  مجھ  سے

    آپ  نے  یاد  دلایا  تو  مجھے  یاد  آیا

    آپ  کی  بزم  میں  سب  کچھ  ہے  مگر  داغؔ  نہیں

    ہم  کو  وہ  خانہ  خراب  آج  بہت  یاد  آیا

    ईद है क़त्ल मेरा अहल-ए तमाशा के लिए

    सब गले मिलने लगे जब के वो जल्लाद आया

    काम उक़्बा में हमारा दिल-ए नाशाद आया

    दी शब-ए वस्ल मो’अज़्ज़िन ने अज़ाँ पिछली रात

    हाए कम-बख़्त को किस वक़्त ख़ुदा याद आया

    मेरे नाले ने सुनाई है खरी किस किस को

    मुँह फ़रिश्तों पे ये गुस्ताख़ ये आज़ाद आया

    ग़म-ए जावेद ने दी मुझ को मुबारकबादी

    जब सुना ये के उन्हें शेवा-ए बेदाद आया

    मैं तमन्ना-ए शहादत का मज़ा भूल गया

    आज इस शौक़ से अरमान से जल्लाद आया

    शादियाना जो दिया नाला ओ शैवन ने दिया

    जब मुलाक़ात को नाशाद की नाशाद आया

    लीजिए सुनिए अब अफ़्साना-ए फ़ुर्क़त मुझ से

    आप ने याद दिलाया तो मुझे याद आया

    आप की बज़्म में सब कुछ है मगर दाग़ नहीं

    हम को वो ख़ाना-ख़राब आज बहुत याद आया

After 1857, he had to move to rampur and later to hyderabad, where he died after 10+ happy years. His Ghazal are more earthy and romantic than sufiyaana or philosophical, but they are very popular because of their musicality. He was a disciple of zauq, whose rivalry with/jealousy of Ghalib is well known. But daaGh had good relations with Ghalib. This is a long Ghazal. It is posted in two parts to make for easy reading and listening. It is also linked to Ghalib naqsh-e qadam – ‘diida-e tar yaad aaya’.

    sab gal’e milne lag’e jab keh vo jallaad4 aayaa 1.celebration, festive occasion 2.killing 3.spectators 4.executioner, beloved
    My execution became a festive occasion for the spectators. Everyone embraced each other when the executioner arrived. The executioner is the beloved herself. Alternatively, it is eid and the beloved arrives and is embraced by everyone (except the lover, who is ignored). This itself becomes like an execution for him.

    cha’in1 karte haiN vahaaN ranj2 uThaane vaale
    kaam uqbaa3 meN hamaaraa dil-e naashaad4 aayaa 1.peace 2.sorrow 3.afterlife 4.unhappy heart
    It is common folklore that you are given sorrows as a trial/test by the divine. Those who suffer through it in this life will be rewarded in the afterlife. That is how the lover’s long suffering heart turned out to be useful to him.

    dii shab-e-vasl1 mo’azzin2 ne azaaN3 pichhli raat4
    haa’e kam-baKht5 ko kis vaqt Khuda yaad aayaa 1.night of union 2.reciter of the caller to prayer 3.call to prayer 4.last night 5.unfortunate wretch
    Conventionally, the call to prayer is considered to be the end of the night and the beginning of a new day. If the lover is with the beloved, he must go away before it gets light so as not to be seen with the beloved and bring her disrepute. What is unsaid is that the lover had gained access to the beloved and was having a good time and just at the crucial time the moa’zzin called the azaan. The beloved turfed him out. He curses the moa’zzin – that unfortunate wretch remembered god at such critical time (kis vaqt)!

    muNh3 farishtoN4 pe ye gustaaKh5 ye aazaad6 aayaa 1.lamentations 2.harshness 3.muNh pe- face to face, frankly 4.angels 5.impudent 6.free-spirited
    My lament has spoken harsh truths to many; this free-spirited, audacious one even challenged the angels.

    Gham-e-jaaved1 ne dii mujh ko mubaarakbaadi2
    jab sunaa yeh keh unheN sheva3-e bedaad4 aayaa 1.eternal sorrow 2.congratulations 3.manner, skill 4.tyranny
    Eternal sorrow congratulated me when it heard that the beloved had mastered the art of tyranny. This is a take-off of the poetic convention that the beloved is a tyrant and lover suffers eternal sorrow because of her tyranny.

    aaj iss shauq4 se, armaan5 se, jallaad6 aayaa 1.desire, longing 2.martyrdom 3.pleasure 4.eagerness, enthusiasm 5.yearning 6.executioner, beloved
    Following poetic convention the poet/lover looks forward with pleasure to being killed at the hands of the beloved. When she arrived with much enthusiasm and yearning that he forgot all about his pleasure. This could be because he had never seen her arrayed like this before and he was transfixed on her presence, forgetting all about the pleasure of being executed. It might also be the seeing her so enthusiastic, he was sure that his own longing was about to be fulfilled and forgot everything else.

    jab mulaaqaat4 ko naashaad5 ki naashaad aayaa 1.celebratory sound/music 2.lamentation 3.wailing 4.meet, greet 5.unhappy
    It is not clear to me who the two unhappy souls are. One is clearly the poet/lover, but who is the other who has come to meet him. It could be a rival who has been similarly ignored by the beloved. In any case, when they met each other, the only celebratory sound/music was that of their lamentation and wailing.

    lijiye suniye ab afsaana1-e furqat2 mujh se
    aap ne yaad dilaayaa to mujhe yaad aayaa 1.tale, story 2.separation
    The poet/lover visited her perhaps when he got access to a rare private visit. He was so elated with this that he had forgotten about the sorrowful story of his separation. She inquired about him. He says – now that you ask, I remembered it, listen now to the tale of separation from me, since you reminded me.

    ham ko vo Khaana-Kharaab3 aaj bahut yaad aayaa 1.gathering 2.stain, blemish, pen-name 3.one who has wrecked his own home, mad passionate desert wanderer
    The poet’s alter-ego is speaking about his own absence. Your gathering has everything, but not daaGh; today, I greatly missed that ruined one.
