That was a friendly phone screening! Let's break down the language. First, give you a buzz. This is casual Kiwi for calling someone on the phone. 'I'll give you a buzz later' means I'll call you. Second, touch base. This means to make quick contact to check in. The recruiter wanted to touch base before the real interview. Third, keen. K-E-E-N. This means interested and enthusiastic. 'I'm really keen' means I really want it, and 'keen as' is an even stronger, very Kiwi way to say it. Fourth, up my alley. If something is 'right up my alley', it suits you perfectly. Fifth, suss out. To 'suss out' something means to figure it out. He sussed out that it was time for a change. Sixth, notice period. This is how long you must keep working after you resign, before you can leave your current job. Seventh, reckon. R-E-C-K-O-N. A very common Kiwi word meaning 'think' or 'believe'. 'I reckon' means 'I think'. Eighth, chuffed. This means pleased or happy about something. And finally, choice. On its own, 'Choice!' is Kiwi slang for 'great' or 'excellent'. Kia ora! Welcome back to the 'Kiwi English Booster'. This is Episode 14, and today we are calling Inland Revenue to sort out our tax. When you start working in New Zealand, there are a few essential tax words you must know. Let's listen to the conversation.

• Speaker 1 : Kia ora, you've reached Inland Revenue, how can I help?

• Speaker 2 : Hi, I've just moved to New Zealand and started a job. I think I need an IRD number?

• Speaker 1 : Yes, you'll need an IRD number so you're taxed correctly. Have you applied for one yet?

• Speaker 2 : Not yet. What's it for exactly?

• Speaker 1 : It's your personal tax number. Your employer uses it, along with your tax code, to take the right amount of tax from your pay. That system is called PAYE.

• Speaker 2 : PAYE? So the tax comes out automatically?

• Speaker 1 : That's right, Pay As You Earn. The tax is taken out before you even get your wages. Did your employer mention KiwiSaver?

• Speaker 2 : A little. Is that a retirement savings thing?

• Speaker 1 : Exactly, KiwiSaver is our work-based savings scheme for retirement. Just a heads up, if you start a business later, you may also need to register for GST.

• Speaker 2 (checking): GST being the tax on goods and services?

• Speaker 1 (confirming): Spot on. It's 15 percent on most things. But for now, let's just get your IRD number sorted.

• Speaker 2 (grateful): Sounds good, thanks so much for your help.

That was a helpful chat about tax! Let's break down these important words. First, IRD number. IRD stands for Inland Revenue Department, the tax office. Your IRD number is your unique personal tax number, and you need it to work and pay tax in New Zealand. Second, Tax code. This is a short code, like a letter combination, that tells your employer how much tax to take out of your pay. Third, PAYE. P-A-Y-E. This stands for 'Pay As You Earn'. It means your tax is automatically taken out of your wages before you receive them. Fourth, KiwiSaver. K-I-W-I-S-A-V-E-R.
