Jim Field visits with Dick Casady about the Atlantic Elk's Sportsman Banquest scheduled for Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10:00 am through the lunch hour.  A game warden will present a program on safe hunting for youngsters and one young winner will receive a .22 rifle.

The ACGC Chargers have had an incredible season thus far. The Chargers head into the regular season finale being a perfect 7-0 on the year following last week's 42-18 win over Mount Ayr. The Chargers got off to a slow start only lead 7-6 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Charger offense exploded for three consecutive touchdown drives to push the lead to 28-18 over the Raiders. The Chargers offense has been a ground and pound team all year long running the triple option offense. Head Coach Cody Mattewson has his Charger offense in the top of the state in rushing. Matthewson gives credit to the players for it being a collective effort and not relying on just one guy to carry the rock.

Matthewson gives a lot of credit to the offensive line for being a disciplined group and making the holes for the Charger runners to break off big carries.

This season has been a big change for the Chargers compared to last season. Last year the Chargers graduated their top three rushers and several key members up front on the line. But Coach Matthewson said what makes this group so special is the willingness to do whatever is asked of them at any point of the game. Coach Cody Matthewson said his kids just want one thing, and that is to win!

This week in the regular season finale the Chargers go on the road to Southwest Valley to take on a 2-5 Timberwolves team. Although the Chargers have a playoff spot locked up they aren't looking forward to that and know they have to finish the season on a positive note and carry that momentum forward. Coach Matthewson said he believes the mentality that his team has on a day-to-day basis will give them a chance to win every night.

Jim Field visits with Atlantic Lions Club members Leon Hodges and Vicki Nordskog about the annual pancake supper on October 19th from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic.  Tickets for the all-you-can-eat event can be purchased from any Lion or at the door for $8.00 per person and 12 and under are $5.00.

The (6-1, 3-1) Treynor Cardinals sit almost locked in at the number 2 spot for District 8 and the playoffs. The Cardinals are coming off a resounding 40-9 victory over Shenandoah. It was after a crushing 49-0 defeat against Underwood. However, Head Coach Jeff Casey was proud of how his team responded in their game with Shenandoah.

Everything clicked for the Treynor offense and defense last Friday. Quarterback Ben Casey went 23-36, 213 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Running back Danny Kinsella had 14 carries, 51 yards, and a score.

The real highlight of the game was the defensive showing for Treynor. They forced 3 turnovers, scored a defensive touchdown, and only allowed 160 total yards. It was a showing that Coach Casey was pleased with.

Now the Cardinal's eyes shift to the (1-6, 0-4) Missouri Valley Big Reds, a team that has struggled to find its rhythm. Even against a team that is winless in district play, Coach Casey isn't overlooking the matchup.

Jim Field visits with Marty Scott, who plays the part of George Harrison in Liverpool Legends.  This internationally-known show has toured the world bringing the Beatles alive.  The Wilson Arts Center in Red Oak will host the group for shows on Saturday, October 14 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, October 15 at 2:30 pm.  Get tickets at www.wilsonartscenter.org.

The Audubon Wheelers have been one of the most dominant and consistent teams in all of high school football.  The Wheelers have proven they can win with not only high-powered offense where they average 42 points per game and have scored 60+ points three different times, but they have shown they can put teams away with tough physical defense. The Wheelers have won two different one score games this year and have shown that they can compete and beat any team on any given Friday night. The Wheelers were able to have both sides of the ball last Friday night at Collins Maxwell where they defeated the Spartans 68-18. It was just 8-6 in favor of the Wheelers in the first quarter and the Spartans were able to keep close and competitive through the first half. The Wheelers took completely over in the third quarter where they won the quarter 34-0 and coach Sean Birks said the Wheelers were able to capitalize on getting short field.

The Wheelers wrapped up a district championship with the victory and were able to get all of their guys in the game to be a part of celebrating a season long goal.

The Wheelers are happy to have accomplished a long tough goal, but Coach Birks said his team is not satisfied and want to have home field through the playoffs with a win this week when they play the 5-2 Baxter Bolts.

The Wheeler defense will have their hands full with the Bolts quarterback Perrin Sulzle who comes in on the season with big numbers of 29 touchdown passes to just 4 interceptions and 1,979 passing yards. Coach Birks said the defense has to be solid and keep the Bolts guessing.
