Global events and experiences leave imprints on all of us, regardless of where you currently live. The inherent interdependence of humans and our biologically wired orientation to connect means that large scale events and developments such as health epidemics and treatment approaches, economic crises, environmental changes, wars, peace initiatives, and social movements leave a psychological, emotional, and energetic imprint on every one of us. Scientific research, through avenues like interpersonal neurobiology, affirms our intraconnectedness as human beings. This means we all are influenced to some degree by collective shifts and developments that occur over the course of our lifetime.... as well as those that have occurred before.  The current landscape of global technological connectivity has only turbocharged the depth and breadth of this shared influence on mindsets, perceptions, and narratives -- our global collective consciousness. Words matter. Have you heard that before? Turns out, what we say and what we write is another shaping force on our inner 'root systems' that influence how we see ourselves, others, and the world. In episode 7 of season 2, Karin explores language through the lens of metaphor. We all use metaphors in our communication, and most of the time we don't even realize we're doing so. Common metaphors to describe events, experiences, or people that we learn or absorb through our lives actually have a powerful influence on how we see, filter, and relate to everyone and everything around us. Karin "zooms out" in this sixth episode of Season 2 to explore ways that culture of the country where you were born (and later, the countries in which you live) shape your inner "root system". Cultures of countries embody experiences, events, history, and stories as well as values and philosophies. Cultures of this sort influence in myriad ways;  through what or who is celebrated and honored, to what or who is punished or ostracized, to what is focused on (or not) in media and advertising, to name a few. As we become more aware of the influences, we can better discern what we choose to reflect and embody as we live our life... and what we don't. Tune in to learn more.

Companies or businesses, schools, places of worship, service organizations/non-profits, recreation leagues, musical groups  -- to name a few -- are all kinds of institutions that Karin calls "communities of purpose". Places we choose to associate with for a specific purpose (to learn, work, pray, give back, exercise, make art, create)  and be a part of for a period of time influence our perspectives, beliefs, and "filters" on the world, sometimes in ways we don't realize. In this fourth episode of Season 2,  Karin explores another shaping force on your inner "root system": neighborhoods or what she calls "communities of place." The neighborhood that you grew up in has a material yet often implicit influence on the stories you carry and the default lenses you use. What you are exposed to, what you observe, what you absorb in those settings all shape perspectives for seeing the world... and seeing yourself and others in it. Tune in to learn more about how your immediate physical 'surround' can expand or limit your perspectives.... and possibilities.

In this third episode of Season 2,  Karin explores the next shaping force on your inner "root system": your ancestors, or family lineage. While it may seem obvious that the family you grew up among has an influence on the lenses through which you see yourself and the world, you also hold within you the influence of ancestors you've never met. Science has demonstrated the validity of such psychological inheritance across generations through the field of epigenetics.  Tune in to learn more about how you reflect the effects of the life experiences of those who came before you.

In this second episode of Season 2,  Karin explores the next shaping force on your inner "root system": individuals from your lived experience who have you have experienced as a "mentor"... or a "tor-mentor". The hyphen is deliberate! Both mentors and tor-mentors shape your perceptions and predictions on how you relate to yourself and others. They can also be sources of illumination for you. Greater awareness on the influence of these individuals provides you with deeper understanding and the ability to make more intentional choices on what you chose to carry forward.
