Paul takes us on a spiritual journey. He begins where we all came from - a position of complete inability whose good works can't save us. He shows us that God promises the very thing we need: new hearts that repent and believe. And he shows is where we're headed together, created for every good work in Christ Jesus.

Paul wants us to understand our problem so that we can see the power of the gospel clearly. All Christians look back at the way we exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and can see that our salvation could have only ever come by faith in the gospel.

We're invited in this passage to imitate Paul in treasuring faith, treasuring our call to preach the gospel, and most importantly, treasuring the gospel itself: sinners made righteous by faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul writes to call the divided Roman churches to unity, unity in the one story of Scripture, and unity in Christ, the exalted Son of God.
