Just before news time, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services completed its 2024 Coastal Region Radio Exercise—the first of its kind. This functional exercise was designed to test the policies, procedures, and protocols of local and regional emergency management and communication systems. As archery season kicks off in California, hunters in four designated zones are now required to test their deer for Chronic Wasting Disease, a deadly illness recently detected in the state for the first time. Despite no cases being identified on the North Coast, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is urging hunters across the state to participate in citizen science efforts by voluntarily testing their deer. With both mandatory and voluntary testing efforts underway, CDFW is mobilizing to contain the spread of this fatal disease, which poses a significant threat to the state's deer and elk populations. On Monday, August 19th, Leggett Valley Unified School District students returned to their classrooms, except for Whale Gulch School students who had to begin their school year on independent study due to insurance issues with their rural, off-grid, campus on the Lost Coast. However, the board, staff, and community have seemingly come together to ensure the future of the students that have made the privately owned campus their educational home. Lisa Music reports.
