Following decades of concern raised over contamination of the lower Smith River, the California North Coast Regional Water Board will meet on October 8th to hear testimony from a growing coalition of residents, scientists and conservation organizations that are seeking to eliminate toxic pesticide use on lands that surround the Smith River estuary. This fall, Redwood National and State Parks plans to conduct a series of prescribed burns in the prairies and oak woodlands of the Bald Hills, east of Orick. Prescribed fire season in the parks begins in late September or as weather permits. Nat Cardos reports.
