KMUSICEVERYDAY

On this week... It's another special episode and this one is an all English episode. Now while "English K-pop" may seem like an oxymoron, it's still an aspect of K-music and K-pop I'd like to explore. And how it's used has changed significantly over the years.

On this episode, I start off with more current songs that are performed in English and end with more classic "English version" K-Pop. In past years, English versions of K-Pop were generally used as a tool to garner more Western listeners. This is especially true in the late 2000s to early 2010s, where companies tried to create English versions of the biggest K-Pop songs in an attempt to make a significant push into the Western mainstream. However, most of these "English versions" were pretty terrible, and understandably so. It's difficult to directly translate Korean to English and the songs would actually be more off-putting than relatable.

Thankfully, in recent years this practice appears less often. Now it seems that instead of an "English version" of a K-Pop song, we get a English song by a K-Pop artist, which are two significantly different things. This may be due to two things:

1. K-Pop has risen to extreme popularity not only in the west, but globally, all the while releasing and performing songs solely in Korean. So the K-Pop industry has realized that it doesn't necessarily need to put out English songs in order to have a wider appeal. Which absolutely makes sense. K-Pop isn't K-Pop if it isn't in Korean right?

2. There seems to be more of an embrace of and by foreign-born K-Pop artists to perform in English. Which also makes sense. While they are K-Pop stars, artists like Jay Park, Tiffany, Amber, and Eric Nam are all American and native English speakers. At some point, it makes sense for them to create music that is wholly relatable to them, and because of that it comes off more authentic, rather than a loosely translated version of a Korean song.

I'm not trying to make some grand thesis here, but these are simply some of my thoughts on the matter based on personal observation. So check out some these great "English versions" from K-Pop artists and let me know what some of your favorites are. Enjoy!

On this week... It's a chill vibe. Nothing but jazzy, bossa nova, soul/funk, chill hip hop stuff this week. I was inspired by a recent trip to Malibu and as summer begins, I think this episode will provide a perfect soundtrack to a relaxing afternoon at the beach. I have also been stuck on Lee Jin Ah's new album, which definitely has some of these vibes on there. So I had to start it off with the track "Bye Bye Bye" from her. We also get into favorite artists like Crush, Zion.T, OOYHO, and more! Relax and enjoy!

On this week... It's all about the ladies. Somehow when putting this episode together it turned out to be all female groups and artists. I simply went through a bunch of new releases and started going for a boppy summer vibe and coincidentally all the tracks were from girls groups and female artists. Kpop summers are usually dominated by girl groups (SISTAR :'[ YOU ARE MISSED) so it's no surprise. Also new stuff from NU'EST W and HAON are in there. Enjoy!

On this week... I really had a good time putting this one together. The episode starts off groovy and smooth and about halfway through it shifts to a wide variety of hip-hop joints. I decided to start with that new Lee Jin-Ah and Gray song, "RUN." Absolutely amazing song. I've been stuck on it for some time now.

In addition, some favorites return like HUS, Ban:jax, CIKi, and DPR Live. Some new stuff from Sandy, AOMG freshman HOAN, and Indigo Music. I also through in a SIk-K "Ring Ring" Edit I did a while back. I wasn't doing anything with it, so figured I would share it. And of course, I had to end with that Jay Park "SOJU" remix. I enjoy it much better than the original english version, but that's just my personal preference. Enjoy!

On this week... It's all about the Sub-Units! We all love when our favorite groups take our favorite members and throw 'em in a separate smaller group. Then said group usually will take on a very different sound or style that we're used to. It's a great, fun thing in the K-pop world, much like cross company collaborations, super groups, or solo debuts. So I took some of my favorite songs from my favorite groups (with the help of my sister) and made this episode. Enjoy!

P.S. Please look forward to more of these "special" episodes. I've been working on a few of these ideas and can't wait to share them.

P.S.S. Let me know in the comments what some of your favorite K-pop sub-units are!

On this week... I've been very busy so this episode came together slowly over the course of a week. It's a good flow. I was surprised how well all the tracks came together. But it has everything from trap, boom-bap hip hop, funk, and grooves. One highlight would be the new single "I'm Sick" from Balming Tiger. I came across this guy unknowingly a while back when I found his acoustic version of "It G Ma" on YouTube. Now he performs under the name Balming Tiger and just released his debut single with a music video you should check out. He also has a previous project online, from which I played a song an episode or two ago, that you can check out on his bandcamp or soundcloud. So we'll keep it at that and enjoy!

On this week... It's a fun one. I had to start it off with that new Park Kyung of Block B, making his solo comeback with "INSTANT," featuring KME All-Star Sumin. If you haven't heard of her, get yourself familiar. I'm sure at this point I've played every song or feature of hers on the KME Mixtape. She is not only one of my absolute favorite Korean artists, but artists in general. To see her work with such big K-pop names now such as Park Kyung and Red Velvet is amazing and she deserves it with the talent she has. Please check out her other stuff and on the KME Mixtape.

Also, I've been bumping that new Taeyeon of course. Her album, "My Voice," wasn't too much my style. But this new release is right up there with "Why," which I obsessed over. So expect to hear some stuff from that including the title track, "Something New." With that, we also have some new stuff from Killagramz featuring Kisum and Don Mills. Amazing track. Plus, songs from Seventeen, A.C.E., ONF, Blackpink, Wanna One, BTOB, and much much more! Enjoy!

On this week... it's a hefty episode with more songs than usual. It was actually a lot longer but I cut it down. But no real overarching theme or sound to this one. I've just been coming across a bunch of good stuff and just wanted to share what I've been collecting. A little bit of this, a little bit of that.

Highlights:

- A great ode to the late XXXTentacion by Kramp (Which my soundcloud feed is just filled with reposts from Korean artists. Crazy see the extent of X's influence)

- Finally some new Simon D! It's been too long.

- A dope track from Cokejazz and Hoody I somehow missed a while back

- A really amazing beat from producer Easymind called, "b r o k e n pieces."

- A bunch of favorites like Jazzyfact, Shinyujinssi, SAAY, J.Lu, and more

Enjoy!

On this week... it's a real "pop-heavy" episode. We've got new stuff from Blackpink and SHINee of course. But I also wanted to play artists I don't usually play. So we have some stuff from High4, Wanna One, 24k, and Playback. And I added a little bit of hip-hop flare as well. So we'll make it short and sweet. It's a great mixed bag of sounds and energies. Enjoy!

On this week... It's all about those RnB baby makers for episode 69, our nicest episode yet. Of course I had to do it because I'm a completely professional, mature adult. So we're starting off the first half of the show with some of the sexiest sounds from artists like Jay Park, Hyolyn, Crush, & Yeseo. After that, it's just some more deep and dope RnB.

A few highlights: A beautiful cover of SZA's "Love Galore" by Dopein; New joint from Sumin called, "MOON"; Somesongs from the 8Balltown crew members Kirin and Jason Lee; and that new "Remember," by Katie, which has one of the dopest videos of the year so far.

So with that, listen with your favorite person; make out, make up, make love, and most importantly... Enjoy!
