What better way to learn about the leadership approach of Jesus than in the Bible? Jason Jensen is the Vice President for Spiritual Foundations for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He is also the author of Formed to Lead, an important book examining Jesus’s leadership style, especially in the first chapters of Luke. Jason explores the connection between spiritual discipline and strong leadership qualities. It anchored us, gave us hope and caused us to look beyond the troubles and fleeting sense that all humans experience. Then what happened? Churches stopped teaching prophecy. Pride doesn’t look dangerous when things are working. It looks “confident” right up until the moment everything collapses and we finally ask for help. As we continue our verse-by-verse Bible study through Isaiah, we land in Isaiah 16 where Moab goes from boasting to begging, sending tribute and pleading for shelter like scattered birds with nowhere to land.

We read the full passage and slow down on the tension Isaiah holds so well: real compassion for suffering people alongside a clear-eyed warning about sin. The chapter opens with a plea to “shelter the outcast” and “grant justice,” raising uncomfortable questions about how God’s people respond to outsiders and even former enemies.
