Publisher's Summary:
At the center of S. P. Miskowski's novel-length fairy tale are three restless girls, best friends stuck in the backwater of Skillute, Washington, in the late 1960s. Their neighbors and families are petty or poor, or both. They warn the girls not to wander into the dense forest. Something evil lurks there, people say. The girls are not convinced. During a playful oath, they wander too far into the woods. Their mistake unleashes a malignant spirit that terrorizes Skillute for the next 50 years.
Critic Reviews:
"Beautifully written and relentlessly suspenseful, it's a great book to curl up with on a cold winter's night. Just be sure to keep the doors locked and all the lights on!" (Lucy Taylor, The Silence Between the Screams)
"...more than a great read; it is a fascinating meditation on the nature of horror. There are supernatural elements to the book, yes, but the setting (an impoverished, ruined logging town) and the main characters (three school girls with hopes and dreams made improbable if not impossible by their realities) are a beautifully rendered commentary on the cyclical nature of real-world human tragedy." (Molly Tanzer, A Pretty Mouth)

Excellent Scare
This is really an excellent scare. This story is creepy and it convincingly makes the impossible, possible. I am inclined to think it is more 3 and half stars but I can't quite get to the full 4. This may be less a fault of the book than my inability to get the just read "Blackwater" series out of my head. While reading "Knock, Knock" I could not help but compare it to the just about perfect "Blackwater". My son, who read "Blackwater" along with me, is having the same problem. We just discussed it and think we need to read either non-horror or short stories for a while in the hope that it will put the Caskey family into a stand-alone place of favorite books. So please give "Knock, Knock" a chance and do not think that my 3 stars is a criticism of the story or the writing. If you like evil spirits and witches and goosebump moments, this is indeed an excellent book for you.
A powerful novel that comes highly recommended!
A coming of age story about three girls who make a blood oath to each other, _KNOCK KNOCK_ by S. P. Miskowski is a captivating read that is impossible to put down until the final page is turned.
The setting is 1960s Skillute, Washington, an old lumber town with a storied history, and plenty of troubling legends to back up that history. One of the legends told is that of Miss Knocks, a vengeful spirit that appears from time to time in a dreary patch of logged-out earth where once a lush forest stood. It is on this very patch of blighted earth that the girls take their vows to never marry and have children; but what follows Ethel, Marietta, and Beverly over the years is not the blessing of liberation they had hoped for, but rather an inescapable curse of stark horror.
S. P. Miskowski writes with conviction, deftly illustrating with words the biological trap that all too often waylays young women when they attain puberty then womanhood, and it is here that the reader experiences the real horror in this novel.
