Welcome to the KnolShare with Dr. Dave podcast.  This is your host Dr. Dave.
KnolShare with Dr. Dave is Streamed on Grokshare.com and broadcasted on iTunes and Google Play.
Jason C. Hall, April Jefferson, and John Le Drew joined me on a Thursday afternoon for a discussion about Diversity and Inclusion at the Agile2018 Conference in San Diego, CA.  John, April, Jason, and I wanted to enjoy some fresh ocean air and decided to record this podcast outside. So, pardon the wind and other city noises that we picked up during the conversation.  I am excited for us as agile coaches that we were able to begin a conversation about diversity and inclusion that affects many people and we can be allies to advocate for safety, enabling everyone on a team or in the organization to be productive without fear.
We used Lean Coffee to create topics for the Diversity and Inclusion discussion.  Lean Coffee was created by Jim Benson and Jeremy Lightsmith. Learn more about Lean Coffee by visiting www.leancoffee.org.
The Lean Coffee topics included in priority order follows:

    Tactics for pay equity
    Hidden diversity
How can you be an ally when you hear / see things?
    Creating inclusive work environments
    Unconscious biases in recruitment
Diversity and Inclusion Scale: 0 Totally Excluded up to 10 Totally Included.
Transparency of pay for a catalyst of equitable incomes in women
IT have a large Asian group contribution in roles yet we don’t see them at conferences much
How to support the advancement of people of color in leadership roles
What is the correlation of Diversity and Inclusion with Agile?

Jason, April, and John please share a little about who you are with the audience.
I will pass the Mic for individual introductions.  Alex, Jenny, Cara, and Steve please share a little about who you are with the audience.
I hope this conversation continues in a positive way for agile coaches to be allies for team members and create safety for inclusion of diverse identities. The diversity and inclusion conversation is relevant in our workplaces, community, and homes.  As agile coaches, we are responsible for making work humane, we owe it to teams and organization to create safety for diverse teams with diverse identities.  The identities include age, gender, race / ethnicity, religion / spirituality, socio-economic status, accessibility, and sexual orientation.

Welcome to KnolShare with Dr. Dave.  This is your host Dr. Dave.
KnolShare with Dr. Dave is Streamed on Grokshare.com and broadcasted on iTunes and Google Play.
This is a special episode on Diversity and Inclusion in the agile community that was kick started at the AgileTonight event during the Agile Alliance Agile2018 conference in San Diego, CA.  At the AgileTonight event on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, four Agile Alliance members shared stories about the direct effect of Diversity and Inclusion on their lives with a room full of other members.  It was a first and I am very appreciative to be a part of that experience. It was a beginning of a conversation that was long overdue. Thank you Agile Alliance members for demonstrating courage to create space for this conversation to take place.
I was one of the members sharing stories about inclusion.  Many people came up to me and said thank you for being courageous for sharing your story, putting yourself out there meant a lot to me.  Others felt the conversation was too light and did not go far enough, because they wanted a deeper dive into the Diversity and Inclusion topic.   A few, who were transparent enough said, it was too sad and heavy. I will assume positive intent for those who felt the subject was too heavy.
Four brave people decided to join me for this podcast at the Agile2018 conference in San Diego, CA.  They were Alex Harms, Jenny Tarwater, Cara Turner, and Steve Holyer.  They requested that we use the title “Looking Forward: What we can do”.
We used Lean Coffee to create topics for the Diversity and Inclusion discussion.  Lean Coffee was created by Jim Benson and Jeremy Lightsmith. Learn more about Lean Coffee by visiting www.leancoffee.org.
The topics included in priority order follows:

    Why are we so fearful?
Can I combine inclusivity and accessibility into one Agile Alliance initiative?
Examples of things that help – learning from experiences that people already have
    What don’t I know?
Why is this topic personally important to me?
Are we using the Agile Alliance code of conduct to shut down conversations or open them up?
    White Women’s’ tears
    Transparency
    Code of conduct training

  • E47: Continual Learning with Dr. Dave Martinez, Early College High School (ECHS) Principal E47: Continual Learning with Dr. Dave Martinez, Early College High School (ECHS) Principal
E47: Continual Learning with Dr. Dave Martinez, Early College High School (ECHS) Principal

Welcome to KnolShare with Dr. Dave.  Streamed on Grokshare.com and broadcasted on iTunes and Google Play.  You are listening to Episode 47, featuring Dr. Dave Martinez, ECHS Principal in Costa Mesa, CA. The topic is “Continual Learning”.  Continual learning is the practice of intentionally identifying new topics that will increase knowledge for personal pleasure or business acumen.
Episode 47 is the second of many topics extracted from my book Elastic Minds: What are Thinking?, that will be featured in coming podcast episodes.
Dr. Martinez opined that “When you go into a program you always want to make data decisions by measuring the temperature and taking a look at the numbers to see if you are making improvements”.  Fundamentally, this is equal to measuring relentlessly, a term used in the lean and agile space.  Evaluate if progress is being made and determine if to pivot or stay the course.
In the journey of helping students achieve the awesomeness, build a team of peers that will be contributors to the students success.  Dr. Martinez stated “You should not go at this alone!”.  Teams are fundamental to delivering business value to organizations and working in teams can bring amount amazing innovations.
Dr. Martinez also said “Put theory into practice”.  One of the key factor is to ensure the students are happy.  Jurgen Appelo’s book Managing for Happiness spoke of the correlation of people being happy and the success in business.  The same applies for students being happy and their success in learning.
The leadership at ECHS is very innovative and encourage students to help curve some of the campus activities.  For example, a survey of students resulted in three programs that improved extracurricular activities on campus.  The wisdom of crowds theory was applied and students responded with innovative programs that was beneficial for the entire student body.
Resilience is relevant to being in a growth mindset for continual learning to be present in a person’s life.  Dr. Martinez tells his students that resilience is having GRIT.  G is for Growth, R is for Resilience, I is for Intensity, and T is for tenacity.  Find a way to learn outside the box so you can be successful.

  • E46: The Power of Observation. Featuring Tracy Treacy, a Therapist and Psychologist E46: The Power of Observation. Featuring Tracy Treacy, a Therapist and Psychologist
Tracy Treacy, Licensed Therapist and Psychologist
Welcome to KnolShare with Dr. Dave.  Streamed on Grokshare.com and broadcasted on iTunes and Google Play.
You are listening to Episode 46, featuring Tracy Treacy, a Therapist and Psychologist. The topic is “The Power of Observation”.  Tracy will share her personal journey and her application of the Power of Observation while practicing her craft. Tracy is the owner of a practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and applies various techniques to help her clients find their awesomeness.

Episode 46 is the first of many topics extracted from my book Elastic Minds: What are Thinking?, that will be featured in coming episodes.   The human mind is complicated, as are its psychology and philosophies.  So too are our varied individual circumstances, dreams and goals … in education, business, artistic expression or social interactions.  Despite the complexities of life, the common and underlying thread is that each experience is just another example of resilience over resistance, agility over adversity ….
In 2018, I plan to apply my power of observation to help people find their awesomeness.
The power of observation gives you data to generate insights about a particular circumstance.  For instance, my observation about my attitude at 4:30 AM versus 4:30 PM is certainly different.  At 4:30 AM I am not the bright-eyed bushy-tailed individual as some people, because I am very nocturnal.  At 4:30 pm I am fired up and ready to go.  At 11:30 pm I am still a high energy person.
As I engage in a practice to help people find their awesomeness, my power of observation must be improved incrementally.  The keen attention to details is not only limited to just what I see but must be expanded to how I hear and the questions that I ask.
I plan to exercise my child-like inquisitiveness of asking “Why”.  Why is it important to get another episode of my podcast done at this time?  How much more productive and satisfied would we feel if more answers to “Why” are known and we paid more attention to the small details? Knowing “Why” is one of the essence of coaching and enables people to find their awesomeness.  The Power of Observation is central to being an effective and successful coach. No matter if you are an agile coach or sports coach or life coach, the need for the Power of Observation is fundamental to enable people to find their awesomeness.
