In 1 Samuel 13:23-14:15, we witness a dramatic shift in Israel’s battle against the Philistines. While King Saul sits passively under a pomegranate tree with his remaining men, his son Jonathan decides to step out. Armed with conviction rather than a massive army, Jonathan and his weapon bearer head toward the Philistine outpost at Michmash.

This verse-by-verse Old Testament teaching explores what it means to actually walk by faith rather than just sitting around waiting for circumstances to change. Jonathan had no special divine revelation or guaranteed outcome. He navigated the steep, rocky pass between Bozez and Seneh knowing the human odds were stacked against him. In this study of 1 Samuel 11, titled Fight Or Sight, we look into a pivotal moment in Israel’s history as Saul steps up to lead the nation against a cruel enemy, demonstrating how God provides deliverance when His people face impossible odds.

Before Dwight D. Eisenhower was officially inaugurated as president, he took a secret, ten thousand mile trip to the front lines of the Korean War to bring a strategy for peace. In a similar way, before Saul was officially inaugurated as king over Israel, a sudden crisis tested his calling.

Nahash the Ammonite laid siege to Jabesh-gilead, threatening to gouge out the right eye of every man to humiliate Israel and render them unfit for battle. Hopeless and ready to compromise, the men of Jabesh called out for a savior.

When news of the siege reached Saul, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him. Saul rallied three hundred thousand men from Israel and thirty thousand from Judah, leading a rapid night rescue that completely scattered the Ammonite forces by morning. Through this dramatic victory, Saul rightly pointed the glory back to the Lord, declaring that God Himself had provided deliverance for His people.

What does an unlikely Australian Olympic gold medal have to do with the first king of Israel? In this study of 1 Samuel 9, we look at the introduction of Saul, a man who stood a head taller than everyone else and looked exactly like the ruler the people wanted. Yet, beneath the impressive exterior, the text reveals a passive individual, blown forward by external pressures, who is consistently acted upon by outside forces rather than his own faith.

We open this teaching with the bizarre story of speed skater Steven Bradbury, who won winter gold in 2002 by simply hanging back, staying out of the way, and waiting for his competitors to crash. It is a historical oddity, but it illustrates the passivity we see in Saul. When his father’s valuable donkeys go missing, Saul is sent on a three-day, sixty-mile search. But the moment the journey gets difficult, Saul’s very first recorded words in scripture are a call to give up: “Come on, let’s go back.” From his father sending him out to his servant urging him forward and providing the silver to see the prophet, Saul is just floating in the background while life happens to him.

Remarkably, Saul lives right near Samuel’s hometown but has no spiritual sensitivity or awareness of who Samuel even is. Yet, despite Israel’s rebellion in demanding a human king, our study highlights the incredible grace of God. We pull back the curtain to see God’s detailed, perfectly timed providence arranging a divine appointment. The Lord cares about the mundane details of our lives, even when we are wandering through frustrating seasons with nothing to show for it.

As Christians, we are called and chosen by God, with the Holy Spirit dwelling inside us. This passage challenges us to live with spiritual purpose rather than sleeping in like Saul or letting outside pressures dictate our path. Instead of sitting in the back waiting for things to happen, we want hearts that rise early, ready to discover the good works God has prepared for us to walk in.

Welcome back to our verse by verse expository Bible study through the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. In this message, titled The King Speech, we look closely at 1 Samuel 8, which marks a major turning point for the nation of Israel.

We begin this study with a fascinating historical illustration from 1260 AD, when Iceland willingly agreed to come under the rule of Norway’s king in exchange for stability and peace. However, this decision quickly led to a centuries long struggle against the monarchy as the king’s grip on trade caused severe food scarcity and other decision led to abuses of the Icelandic people. It took until 1944 for Icelanders to finally vote for independence. This historical parallel mirrors what happens in 1 Samuel 8 when the elders of Israel gather at Ramah to demand a human king so they can be just like all the pagan nations around them.

The people use the corruption of Samuel’s sons, Joel and Abijah, as an excuse to demand a new system. This reminds us how our personal witness matters, because when we do not walk by faith, it can give people a reason to stay in their sin. But the real issue here is not Samuel’s sons; it is a spiritual problem manifesting as a political demand. God tells Samuel that the people have not rejected him, but they have rejected the Lord as their King. They are repeating the exact same mistake Adam and Eve made in the Garden of Eden by trying to kick God off the throne of their lives.

Samuel solemnly warns the people about the heavy cost of a human ruler, explaining how a worldly king will take, take, and take. He will take their sons for his chariots, their daughters for his kitchens, and a tenth of their grain and flocks. Rather than being the King’s children under God’s sovereign grace, they would become a tyrant’s commodities to be exploited.

But stepping toward God often triggers opposition. As the people gather in sweet worship, their enemy, the Philistines, march up to launch a preemptive attack. Though terrified, Israel chooses to trust God’s promise of deliverance. Instead of scrambling for military weapons, they continue to worship and look to the Lord to answer. God responds with thunder, throwing the enemy into total confusion and granting Israel a historic victory.

Afterward, Samuel sets up a memorial stone named Ebenezer, declaring that the Lord has helped them to this point. God even provides unexpected peace with the internal Amorite population, showing that He consistently does more than we think to ask.

In this message, titled This Is The Plague That The Lord Has Made, we dive into 1 Samuel 5:1 to 7:1 to see what happens when the Philistines capture the Ark of the Covenant and try to treat Israel’s God like just another local deity.

The Philistines place the Ark in the temple of their god, Dagon, thinking they have won a great victory. But the next morning, they find Dagon fallen face down before the Ark. It is a striking illustration of human religion trying to patch up a broken idol that cannot even stand on its own, let alone save anyone.

He sends a severe plague of tumors and rats upon the Philistine cities of Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron. Even these animals, acting against their natural instincts to stay with their calves, head straight for the territory of Israel, proving that this was not a random coincidence. This was entirely the hand of the living God.

When the Ark arrives at Beth Shemesh, the people forget the holiness of God and peek inside, leading to a swift and sobering judgment. This reminds us of a crucial spiritual truth: we cannot handle holy things with careless familiarity.
