Kollaboration zu den Mapuche-Sammlungen im Ethnologischen Museum

Das Volk der Mapuche kämpft gegenüber Chile und Argentinien um seine Anerkennung. Die Staaten hatten die Mapuche im 19. Jahrhundert gewaltsam von seinen angestammten Territorien vertrieben. In dieser Zeit gelangten auf verschiedenen Wegen viele Fotos und Tonaufnahmen, Schmuck- und Alltagsgegenstände der Mapuche in die Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums Berlin. Sie erzählen von Gewalt und Enteignung, aber auch von Mapuche-Identität. Eine Delegation der Mapuche besuchte 2025 Berlin, um die Gegenstände zusammen mit den Mitarbeitenden des Museums zu sichten, sie spirituell zu pflegen und das Wissen, das damals nicht erfasst wurde, zu ergänzen. Dabei kam es zu wichtigen, aber schmerzhaften Begegnungen.

Lena Steffens ist derzeit Doktorandin der Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie an der Freien Universität Berlin und arbeitet zu materieller Kultur der Mapuche und deren Musealisierung.

Nicolás Valenzuela Quintupil ist ein Mapuche-Anthropologe und -Historiker. Er ist als Experte für Museen und Forschungsprojekte zum kulturellen Erbe der Mapuche tätig.

Stefanie Schien ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin für die Südamerika-Sammlungen am Ethnologischen Museum zu Berlin. Neben ihrer kuratorischen Tätigkeit befasst sie sich auch mit Sammlungsaufarbeitung und Provenienzforschung.

María Elena Huentuleo Quechupan ist eine gürekafe (Weberin) und arbeitet im Bereich der kulturellen Bildung. Sie hat außerdem Jura studiert und verfügt über Abschlüsse in Indigener Kultur und öffentlicher Politik.

Patricia Huinca Blanco ist eine gürekafe (Weberin) und darüber hinaus eine machi (spirituelle Autorität). Ihre Arbeit wurde bereits in Interviews und Dokumentationen vorgestellt.

Collaboration on the Mapuche collections in the Ethnologisches Museum

The Mapuche people are fighting for recognition from Chile and Argentina. These states forcibly displaced them from their traditional territories in the 19th century. During this period, many photographs, audio recordings, jewellery and everyday objects belonging to the Mapuche people were brought into the collections of the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin. These pieces are a testimony of violence and dispossession, but also of Mapuche identity. In 2025, a delegation of Mapuche people visited Berlin in order to view the collection together with the museum staff, to care for the objects spiritually, and to supplement the knowledge that was not recorded at the time. This lead to important but painful encounters.

Lena Steffens is currently a PhD student in social and cultural anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin, researching the material culture of the Mapuche and its musealisation.

Nicolás Valenzuela Quintupil is a Mapuche anthropologist and historian, he acts as an expert for museums and research projects on Mapuche cultural heritage.

Stefanie Schien is the curator of the South American collections at the Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin. In addition to her curatorial work, she is also concerned with collection and provenance research.

María Elena Huentuleo Quechupan is a gürekafe, a weaver, and works in the cultural education sector. She also studied law and holds degrees in Indigenous culture and public policy.

Antonio Chihuaicura Chihuaicura is a teacher of Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche, and a rutrafe, a silversmith. He has worked with museums and educational projects on Mapuche cultural heritage.
