August 01, 2020 Yun Dong-Ju's Poem (KAC's Culture Class Recap)
Today’s episode is on the beloved Korean poet, Yun Dong-Ju.
His poetry collection title: “하늘과 바람과 별과 시”. In English: “Sky, Wind, and Stars” (시 means poems)
Yun Dong-ju (December 30, 1917 - February 16, 1945) was a Korean poet active during the period of Japanese rule (1932–1945). Known for his writing of lyric poetry as well as resistance poetry, he was born in what is now “Yanbian,” an autonomous prefecture in Jilin province with a large Korean resident population, in the northeastern part of China. The area was then the base of the Korean movement for independence from Japan. Yun Dong-ju began writing poetry as a boy, and argued with his father, who wanted him to study medicine instead of literature. While studying at Yeonhui Technical School (now Yonsei University) in Seoul, he prepared a collection of nineteen poems, but his professor advised him to delay its publication because of Japanese censorship. In 1942, Yun went to Japan to study English literature. In 1943, as he was traveling home for the summer holidays, he was arrested as a “thought criminal” by the Japanese police and sentenced to two years of prison on the charge of having participated in the independence movement. He died in prison on February 16, 1945.
His collected works, published by his family posthumously in 1948 as “Sky, wind, stars, and poems,” has become a perennial best-seller in Korea, and he is currently the national poet of the Republic of Korea. His poetry is characterized by contrast between qualities of defiance and humility, depth and simplicity, and passion and self-discipline.

July 26, 2020 [Pronunciation] "How to Sound Natural" 자연스럽게 말하는 방법 - Excerpts from Lecture by Kyung Ah Cecilia Chun
안녕하세요!
We had a special culture class where anyone who is taking one of the Korean American Center Irvine Sejong Institute’s Korean class currently can enter and participate in the the one hour class for free. Last week we had a class on pronunciation and intonation led by teacher 경아선생님.
So in this class we learned some ways to make yourself sound more natural when you speak Korean. One way is to use a lot of connecting words. So these 4 connecting words can come in handy:
그리고 and (conversationally: 그리구) changing the valve for the last syllable from to you could evil
그런데 but, by the way (conversationally: 근데)
그래서 so, therefore (conversationally: none)
그러면 then, if so (conversationally: 그럼)
And there are some filler words that you can use to make yourself sound a little more natural. So there are five of them:
저기 excuse me, wait (저기, 하루 씨! Excuse me, Haru!)
음 um (음, 그럴까요? mm, shall we?)
제 생각에는 I think (제 생각에는 맛있는 거 같아요 in my opinion, I think it’s delicious)
그게 let’s see, I mean (그게… 나도 잘 모르겠어. I mean… I’m not sure about it either)
아 Oh! Well- (아, 안녕하세요?)
So I don't know if this really helped you but these are some ideas if you want to work on sounding more natural as a Korean language learner. So this is one example that we can put together to make sentences spoken with these filler words so here we go:
아, 안녕하세요? 저는 지니고요. 오렌지 카운티에 살아요. 음, 저는 코리안 드라마 좋아해요. 반갑습니다.
(Ah, hello! I’m Jini and I live in Orange County. Mm, I like Korean dramas. Nice to meet you!)

안녕하세요 여러분! 지니입니다.
여러분, 요즘 덥죠? It’s hot these days, isn’t it?
Today, let’s learn some words related to 여름. Summer.

Sun 해, or 태양
Sunlight 햇볕
It’s hot! 더워요!

A cold drink 차가운 음료수
To swim. 수영하다. In the present tense formal form, you can say 수영해요.
Beach 바다, or 바닷가. 바닷가 is more like “beachside”.
Hat 모자
AC 에어컨. Basically short for Air Con. From conditioner. This is what one might call a Konglish word.
And lastly, vacation 휴가.
여러분, 이번 여름에 여행해요? Are you traveling this summer?
어디 가요? Where are you going?
You can say the place that you are going to followed by the verb 가요 which means ‘go’.
If you are not going anywhere, you can say 안 가요. Not going.
아무데도 안 가요. I am not going anywhere.
자, I’d like to end today’s episode with a song that’s titled hot like crazy. 미친듯이 더워! see if you can catch some of the words we learned in the lyrics. But you should definitely hear the word ‘더워’ which is an informal way to say “it is hot!”

안녕하세요 여러분! 지니입니다. We have many great teachers at the Korean American Center, Irvine Sejong Institute. And one of them is teacher Judy Park, some people know her as 박현정 선생님. Did you know that she is an author of children’s poems and even won an award for a poem she wrote? So today, I will share with you her poem titled 엄마 안은 날, which can be translated as the day that I hugged mom. She won the Rookie Poetry Award at the 8th annual US Children’s Literature Contest. 엄마 means mom, 안은 날, means day that I hugged. The word I actually is not in the title, but is implied.
Here is what she wrote as a background story to how she wrote this poem:
어릴 때, 엄마를 안으면 느껴지는 엄마 냄새가 참 좋았어요. 그 냄새가 참 따뜻하고 위로가 되었어요. 그리고 엄마 심장 박동 소리와 내 소리가 함께 울리는 느낌이 참 좋았어요. 두 아이의 엄마로 미국에서 살면서 제일 아쉬운 것은 힘들 때 괜찮다고 위로해 줄 엄마 품에 안길 수 없다는 거예요. 그 마음을 담아 동시를 써 보았어요.
When I was young, the smell of my mom was very good. The smell was very warm and comforting. And I really liked the sound of my mother's heartbeat and mine beating together. The most difficult thing about living in America as a mother of two children is that I cannot run into my mother’s arms to be comforted by her when I am feeling tired and troubled. I tried to write this poem with that feeling.

July 16, 2020 [News] KAC's Zoom Cultural Classes (Advanced Level Listening Practice)
(A Korea Times article from Jun 17, 2020 titled “어바인 세종학당 봄학기 온라인 수업 (Irvine Sejong Institute Spring Semester Online Classes)”
어바인 세종학당(학당장 김태미)은 지난 3주 동안 무료 한국 문화수업을 진행했습니다. 학생들은 줌(Zoom)을 통해 온라인으로 한국 민화 체험과 케이팝 노래교실, 한국어 관용어 수업을 받았습니다.
신혜정 강사(한국민화협회 이사)는 본격적인 수업에 앞서 민화에 대한 안내와 함께 ‘일월오봉도’ 그림의 도안과 완성본을 미리 학생들에게 이메일로 보냈으며, 짧은 시간에 20명의 학생들이 신청할 만큼 한국민화에 대한 뜨거운 관심을 보였습니다. ‘일월오봉도’는 최근 BTS 멤버인 슈가의 뮤직 비디오, ‘대취타’의 첫 장면에 나오는 배경 그림으로 학생들에게는 한국적인 그림의 특성을 한눈에 보여주는 작품입니다.
신혜정 강사는 자신의 집에 전시되어 있는 다양한 민화 작품을 보여준 후, 그 작업과정을 실시간 화상으로 보여주면서 우리 민화의 독특한 아름다움을 해설해 줬습니다. 학생들은 자신들이 준비한 ‘일월오봉도’의 기본도안에 색을 칠하면서, 해, 달, 소나무, 파도 등이 상징하는 의미와 노란색 옷을 입은 왕이 자리했을 때 비로소 한국의 전통적 오방색이 완성된다는 사실도 알게 됐습니다.
특히 학생들은 한국 화폐 1만원권에 그려진 세종대왕과 그 배경 그림이 무엇인지, 또 지금도 청와대의 영빈관이 어떻게 꾸며졌는지 등, 강사가 준비한 흥미로운 민화퀴즈를 풀면서 학생들은 지금도 다양한 형태로 변화하고 있는 한국민화를 체험할 수 있었습니다.
두 번째 문화수업은 케이팝 노래 교실로 먼저 학생들은 자신이 좋아하는 노래를 들려주면서 어떻게 한국어를 효과적으로 공부할 수 있는지를 보여줬는데, 노랫가사의 문법을 활용해 문장을 만드는 솜씨가 수준급이었습니다.
초급반 학생들은 어린이 동요, 곰 세 마리와 ’위, 아래’ 가요 개사곡을 떼창으로 부르며, 노래로 한국어 숫자와 위치어를 순식간에 외울 수 있다는 걸 몸으로 보여줬습니다. 특히 BTS 열성 팬들은 줌 뒷 배경을 멤버 사진으로 장식했습니다.
심지니 교사는 우리 민요 ‘아리랑’의 가락을 소개하고 조상들이 인생의 어려운 고비를 이겨내려고 할 때, 민중들이 함께 힘을 내며 불렀던 노래로서 아리랑의 유래와 의미를 설명했습니다.
한편 이날 참가 학생들은 정의, 평화, 공감, 평등, 안전, 건강, 행복 등의 한글을 써 보여주었고 다양한 타인종의 학생들과 함께한 케이팝 노래교실로 마무리했습니다.

Our middle school class finished our special summer program this past week.
저희 중학생 한국어 특별 여름 수업이 지난 주에 끝났습니다.
