Guest: Adam Sobel, Pedro Paulo Zahluth Bastos
Adam Sobel, @profadamsobel, directs Columbia University'''s Initiative on Extreme Weather and Climate. He joins us to look at the disaster of climate, politics, and public health that is Hurricane Florence.
Pedro Paulo Zahluth of Campinas University on a different sort of catastrophe, that of the upcoming Brazilian election on October 7. It is complicated: the popular Workers Party (PT) former President In'''cio Lula polled higher than any other candidate for President, though he is in jail and can't run. His running mate, former Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad is running with Lula's full backing. The leading candidate is the extreme rightwing politician Jair Bolsonaro, who survived an assassination attempt by stabbing a few weeks ago. He is the closest thing imaginable to a Brazilian Donald Trump, though one who openly flirts with fascism. Pedro Paulo brings us some clarity and understanding of what is going on and what is at stake.
