Kristen Lowry serves as International Orphan Care Consultant for Send Relief, where she advises Southern Baptist missionaries, churches, and partners on best-practice care for orphans and vulnerable children based on biblical principles and emerging research in the field. She also serves as  Co-Executive Director of Shelter Yetu in Naivasha, Kenya, where she and her team have helped more than 600 street-connected children find healing and hope as they are reintegrated with safe, loving families. She lives outside of Nairobi, Kenya with her husband, Daniel, and their four children.  

For Christian parents, it can feel like an uphill battle to raise loving and compassionate children in an increasingly self-centered, lost world — but there are tangible steps parents can take to build empathy in their little ones.  
Kristen Lowry, mother of four and child welfare expert with Send Relief and Shelter Yetu, can share practical ways to foster love and a heart for service in our children, like:  

• Educating our children about how some of their peers around the world in less fortunate circumstances live — some live in poverty, some live in crisis-stricken regions, and some are separated from their families 
• Involving our children in conversations about how we can help their peers who are in need — this could look like identifying opportunities to support vulnerable children and families through material resources and prayer  
• Setting a positive example of humility for our children — sharing support with vulnerable individuals or communities doesn't make us superior, it's simply an act of obedience to God's instructions to be good stewards of His resources
