Why is it so difficult to identify future performance? Despite all of the resources, time, and effort we really have not gotten that much better at it.
This week on Krush Performance, we talk with Lou Farah, Sport Researcher at York University, who has focused the majority of his research on the professional sports draft and athlete selection process, in particular the NHL draft.
What makes a great hockey player?
I want to get to a few major points in our Talent ID conversation with Lou. We discuss:
• Where we are at in our understanding of talent and identifying future talent?
• Why have we historically been so poor at predicting future talent and performance?
• What are some of the things we need to think about to improve our ability to select and predict future performance?
• How important is it to select the right athlete/player into the right environment?
• How do the values of an organization steer the selection process?
• And what are scouts looking for as they evaluate talent?
• Are they focusing on the correct things or should we recalibrate what we find important in athlete selection and talent ID?
• Scouting may be one of the most difficult positions in all of sport, we’ll discuss why.
