EPISODE ONE: THE THREE VEHICLES OF BUDDHISM
This opening teaching with KSC's resident Lamas Yeshe Parke and Pema Clark offers a rich and accessible introduction to the historical Buddha, beginning with the cultural landscape into which he was born. Listeners learn about the two ancient civilizations that shaped India—an indigenous agrarian culture and a later warrior culture whose arrival brought profound societal transformation. Out of this amalgamation arose a deeply stratified caste system, into which Prince Siddhartha was born.
Through the story of Siddhartha’s privileged early life, his shocking encounters with sickness, aging, and death, and his courageous decision to leave home in search of a solution to suffering, we follow the unfolding of a spiritual quest that still resonates today. The teaching traces his studies with the great teachers of his time, his years of ascetic practice, and the profound insight that neither indulgence nor extreme renunciation could end suffering.
From this realization, Siddhartha discovers the Middle Way—a balanced path of clarity, discipline, and deep inquiry. His enlightenment marks the beginning of the Dharma, the teachings that “straighten” the mind and help us return to harmony.
This episode introduces the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, including:
- The Four Noble Truths
- Interdependence
- Non-self
- The Three Marks of Existence
- The Four Veils
- The lifestyle of renunciation and ethical discipline
- The emergence of the early Buddhist schools (Theravāda)
Listeners are invited to reflect on their own relationship to suffering, courage, community, and the bravery required to walk a spiritual path.
