कदाचित् रामकृष्णपरमहंसेन सह प्रबन्धकः मथुराबाबुः अन्ये केचन च तीर्थयात्रां कुर्वन्तः देवघरप्रदेशं प्राप्तवन्तः । तस्मिन् काले महान् क्षामः प्रसृतः आसीत् । आहाराभावकारणतः जनाः महत् कष्टम् अनुभवन्तः आसन् । तत्रापि सन्थालजातीयाः वनवासिनः भोक्तुम् अन्नं, धर्तुं वस्त्रं च अप्राप्नुवन्तः किङ्कर्तव्यताविमूढाः आसन् । रामकृष्णवर्यः एतेषां कष्टस्य निवारणाय दृढनिश्चयम् अकरोत् । तीर्थयात्रायै रक्षितं धनं, धनवतां सम्पर्कं च कृत्वा सङ्गृहीतं धनं च उपयुज्य वनवासिनां निमित्तम् आहारव्यवस्था वस्त्रादिव्यवस्था च यथायोग्यं परिकल्पिता तेन ।

Once, during a pilgrimage to Deoghar with Mathura Babu and others, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa witnessed a severe famine. People suffered greatly due to lack of food, and the Santhal tribesmen in particular had neither food nor clothing. Determined to relieve their suffering, Ramakrishna used the money saved for the pilgrimage and gathered funds through wealthy contacts. With this, he arranged proper supplies of food and clothing for the forest dwellers.
