Martin Kastner’s passion for and natural fascination about wildlife lead him to pursue a degree in biology, and that lead him to get a master’s degree in restoration ecology. That is when he discovered that his real passion is the recovery of wildlife species. Kastner applied for a job here on Guam and worked with the Sali-Micronesian Starling on Guam, studying their adaption to nesting in manmade nest boxes at Andersen Air Force Base.
In this interview, Martin shares his observations of the såli concerning its mating phases and characteristics of laying eggs and the period of incubation, parental sharing of responsibilities of their chicks, and thee maturation and mortality rate of the Såli, one of Guam native birds.
