On the latest Soft Power Radio, as part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community, we are in conversation once again with Donald Griffin and RoMar Tolliver, co-founders of Black Wall Street. Food pantry, resource hub, youth counseling initiative, tutoring center, at-risk and low-income outreach program - Black Wall Street has, in less than two years, become a vital community asset. Donald and RoMar built all of their innovative, grassroots programming from scratch, starting with nothing but a vision and a seemingly endless supply of dedication to their work. We talk about why their particular approach is so necessary and so effective, what projects they have been developing since they moved to their new location at 1301 Cordone Ave a few months ago, and what the bright future holds for Black Wall Street and for the communities it so tirelessly serves.

As part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community on Soft Power Radio, we are in conversation with Jammal Tarkington. Jammal first came to Reno from his hometown of Stockton on a UNR music scholarship in the early 90s. Not long after, he was already selling out local music venues and sharing the stage with now-legendary bands like No Doubt, Fishbone, The Specials, and Sublime. He has played casinos, clubs, bars, coffee shops, underground DIY all-ages spots - pretty much everywhere music has happened in Reno, Jammal has been there in some way. These days, he spends a lot of time teaching, curating, and DJing as well as writing and performing with various projects spanning styles from hip-hop to soul to acoustic rock to reggae. In April, Jammal's Reno/Sacramento collaborative hip-hop group Who Cares will be coming to the Holland project for a combination master class and performance - keep your eyes peeled for more info on that soon!

Today, on Soft Power Radio, as part of our Black History Month special series honoring the local community, we are in conversation with Jasmine Plummer of Carson City. At age 11, Jasmine was the first ever female quarterback of a Pop Warner football team. Her story is an inspiration to female athletes everywhere - and it inspired a Hollywood movie starring Keke Palmer and Ice Cube - The Longshots. We'll talk about the central role sports have played in Jasmine's life and the power of sports in general, particularly for young people.
