In part 3 of our series on houselessness in Reno, we are in conversation with Monica DuPea. Monica is the founder and executive director of NYEP, the Nevada Youth Empowerment Project. NYEP's core initiative is the Community Living Program, which provides houseless young women ages 18-24 with housing, mentorship, and structure - essentially with the support and guidance of a nurturing home. Monica is currently working to build low-income housing through Truckee Meadows Housing Solutions, an innovative non-profit that strives to bridge the gap between developers, businesses, contractors, and community service providers, getting 'all hands on deck' to tackle Reno's affordable housing crisis. You can learn more about NYEP and Monica's other projects, including how to donate, contribute, or get involved, at nyep.org.

Today on Soft Power Radio, we are in conversation with Grant Denton, in Part Two of our ongoing series about Reno's houseless community. Grant is the founder and executive director of the Karma Box Project - you've probably seen some of his Karma Boxes around town, stocked by generous people like you with food, hygiene products, and other useful items. We talk with Grant about how his experience living on the street informs his outreach - his projects focus on giving people useful work to do as a way to rebuild their self-worth, which Grant thinks is a vital first step towards a healthier life.
On episode three of General Strike Radio, Adam interviews Teamsters Local 533, President Gary Watson. Adam and Gary discuss the continued struggle between bus drivers and Keolis North America, the bus operation contractor for the Washoe Regional Transportation Commission. Keolis has consistently jeopardized the safety of bus drivers as well as riders with its haphazard approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Teamsters are fighting back.
