  • Can drinking and driving cost you your job? Hedda Schensema, Director in Employment Law at CDH

As we enter the festive season, which officially kicked off at the start of December, we can notice the increase in people’s festive cheer and good spirits. This typically goes hand-in-hand with the consumption of alcohol and a subsequent spike in drunk driving incidents on the South African roads.

Whilst the prospect of an arrest and possible prosecution seems daunting (although clearly not enough of a deterrent for those who indulge in this reckless behaviour), what of the additional concern of possibly losing one’s job as a result of an arrest related to driving under the influence?

Employment law experts at local legal firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) explain that the power to discipline employees flows from the contract of employment and is therefore generally limited to the way in which employees conduct themselves within a workplace. However, in instances where fellow employees may be involved or where the nature of the misconduct perpetrated outside of the workplace has a detrimental impact on the employment relationship, an employer may have grounds for dismissal.

  • Mens Health interview: Dr Kashmal Kalan, Medical Director at the Alvi Armani Clinic

November is Men’s Health Awareness month, and it is usually a time to raise awareness on issues that men face and offer solutions, where applicable. Our fathers, brothers and friends face numerous health crisis and more times than not, men are afraid to speak. A lack of confidence in the way a man looks can affect many areas of his life as appearance plays a pivotal role in a man’s life; A YouGov Body Image Big Survey found that 89% of study respondents said they believe that physical appearances matter in today’s society, and that 87% believe people who are considered to be good-looking are treated more favourably.

Baldness should not be a life sentence that can cause mental health issues or a low self-esteem . We are living in the most advanced times, where we get solutions to almost all the problems we are faced with.

There is help and treatments nationally and globally, with hair transplants being one such treatment. Hair experts continuously encourage hair transplants. Experts, scientists, and medical doctors are performing hair transplants to tell people suffering from hair loss, that it is not the end of the “Good Looking” era, they are giving thousands of patients more hope and to help combat feelings of low self-esteem that are associated with hair loss.
