It’s the first day of school for 113,000 students in the Philadelphia School District. The year begins with both excitement and concern, as we hear from KYW Newsradio education reporter Mike DeNardo.

More than 30 baby rheas were born over the last week at Six Flags Wild Safari in Jackson Township, New Jersey.

Rheas are large, flightless birds closely related to ostriches and emus. They're native to South America. They can grow to 5 feet tall, but these chicks are not much bigger than the size of your hand.

The director of Wild Safari says having so many chicks born in such a short period is "an exciting milestone" for the animal care team.

Visitors have until Sept. 7 to see the chicks before Wild Safari closes for the season.

This could be the last summer of free beaches in Strathmere.

The Upper Township Committee is set to vote Monday night on an ordinance that would require beach tags from the Friday before Memorial Day to the end of September.

Season tags in the Cape May County town would cost between $30 and $45. A single day would be $10.

Most shore points charge for access to the sand and surf. Notable exceptions include the Wildwoods and Atlantic City.

Just in time for students to return from summer break, the City of Philadelphia is rolling out new speed cameras outside four schools.

The cameras have been installed on Alleghany Avenue near John Stetson Middle School, on Olney Avenue near the Widener Memorial School, on Girard Avenue near the High School of the Future, and on Walnut Street near William Sayre High School.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority said it chose these areas based on crash data from 2019 to 2023.

There were dozens of crashes outside these schools during that time period, including one that was fatal.

The cameras are already in full effect. There's no warning period because the cameras were activated during a testing phase this past April.

Children in Delaware County received free backpacks and school supplies ahead of the new school year. The giveaway was run by a foundation dedicated to the memory of a little girl who was shot and killed by police. KYW Newsradio's Vik Raghupathi was there.

It is the first day of classes for 113,000 students in the Philadelphia School District, but more than 400 students at Kensington High School will start their year at a different building because of asbestos.

Students are being shuttled to the former Austin Meehan Middle School in Mayfair, about 7 miles away from Kensington High.

A judge on Friday turned down an attempt to block the move.
