Two families are suing the company that operated the medical jet that crashed along Cottman Avenue in front of the Roosevelt Mall in January, killing eight people and leaving a wake of destruction.

A Philadelphia City Council committee advanced a bill on Monday to ban the burning of the city’s trash, despite a plea from city officials to wait until there’s a more comprehensive plan for dealing with the waste it collects. KYW’s City Hall bureau chief Pat Loeb reports.

As more and more consumer products have lithium batteries, the risk of difficult-to-extinguish fires is always increasing. A bill that advanced out of the Senate Commerce Committee without any votes against it would require on-site fire suppression systems that can be operated remotely.
