The Making of America film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge—art, science, architecture, and cartography—produced enduring frameworks for racial slavery, territorial extraction, and Indigenous dispossession in what became the United States of America.

The Fall tour schedule kicked off at Historic Fort Snelling on Saturday, September 5th. The event brings together film, history, scholarship, and visual art for an afternoon of reflection and imagination at one of Minnesota’s most historically significant sites.  Thank you to Artist Avi Noelle Thomas and community members Joey, Tao (from South Korea), Audrey, Mark, Kevin (CEO MN Humanities) and Film Director, Monique Linder for sharing their reflection of the Fort Snelling screening and art showcase.

Aniya Capri, OMG Studios Innovation Lab (4-Year Apprentice/Youth Leader)

Aniya is a passionate youth advocate, creative, co-author and TEDx speaker born & raised in St. Paul. She Grew up as a dancer, cheerleader, and leader destined to make an impact. As a child, a fire was ignited in her to champion the Black liberation movement now, she is committed to a lifelong journey of engaging in liberation and justice for herself, her family, and the Black community through intentional practices of healing, education, and creative expression. By following her passion, she has accumulated experience in education reform & restorative justice, breath work & mindfulness, and organizing & facilitation. She also has a passion for documenting life through videography, journaling, and storytelling and is recently apart of producing and starring in 3 local documentaries. She values drumming, writing poetry, and learning, as well as humanity, systems change, and co-creating. 

Jevetta Steele, OMG Studios Innovation Mentor/Vocal Coach

Jevetta Steele is known for Corrina, Corrina (1994), Great Performances (1971) and Prince and the New Power Generation: Diamonds and Pearls Live at Glam Slam (2023).  In the 1980s, Jevetta Steele — along with her family group, The Steeles — toured the world in the musical The Gospel at Colonus. The show had another successful run at St. Paul’s Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in 2010. And many remember Jevetta’s Academy Award-nominated performance of “Calling You,” from the film Baghdad Café. Among her solo albums is 2006’s My Heart.

Linder founded her company, OMG Digital Media Solutions, a media, entertainment and technology consulting firm in 2014, a unique media brand focused on cultural programming. OMG strives to empower communities through its OMGsims, social constructs rooted in the Arts that nurture and improve the health and wellness of youth and families.  Allegories of a Better World Exhibit

The Allegories of a Better World Exhibit is happening in conjunction with “The Making of America” film premiere. The exhibition features works submitted by artists nationwide, which examine themes such as virtue and moral courage; nobility beyond class or status; truth, justice, and liberation; reconstruction and unlearning; memory, history, and inherited systems; cultural healing and collective imagination; and more.

KZMOHD's Monique Linder interviews OMG Studios Innovation Lab featured Artist Alana Enfinity to discuss the "Allegories Of A Better World" art lab project the youth are working on.  

Ms. Alana was selected to be the curator of the exhibition taking place at the Minneapolis Institute of Art on June 28th that invites artists from around the nation through a National Call to manifest their own allegories of the world they want to see — using art, symbolism, visual narrative, and film as tools of inquiry, truth-telling, resistance, and imagination. 

In this spirit, of Reconstruction Destructed and the fact that reconstruction was deliberately destroyed and we are living in a period of we are calling Reconstruction 2.0, we ask artists to examine what reconstruction means as we approach the 250th year commemoration of the signing of the declaration of independence, as an urgent present-day call in this moment.

Selected works will culminate in a public exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art on June 28th, the official premiere date of Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery: The Making of America, presented in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center.
