KZN Human Settlements takes over temporary accommodation for 2022 flood victims

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements has taken over the management of temporary accommodations for victims of the 2022 floods. This follows reports of evictions from a Durban hotel due to unpaid bills by the provincial government. More than 150 people, including women and children, were left on the streets after the Bayside Hotel eviction. The department has since secured Montclair Lodge for R33 million to house displaced families, with plans to move them in by December after refurbishments. Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says some victims faced intimidation from rogue elements, discouraging them from accepting temporary shelters. He spoke to Elvis Presslin
