Margaret O’Neill is a postdoctoral researcher in the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, University of Galway, Ireland. Her research is interdisciplinary, exploring social and cultural representations of ageing.

Margaret tells us a story about a man and a woman, both in their fifties, living in Ireland. Both took up new jobs late in their working lives. Their career progress was delayed due to personal circumstances, as well as traditional expectations about what men and women should do in life.   Now, they are both doing jobs that they love. However, their retirement pathways and prospects are uncertain. It is important that employer and government policies are in place to offer choice in retirement decisions regardless of work history.

Margaret nous raconte l'histoire d'un homme et d'une femme, tous deux âgés de 50 ans et vivant en Irlande. Il ont trouvé un nouvel emploi à un stade avancé de leur vie professionnelle. Leur progression de carrière a été retardée en raison de circonstances personnelles, ainsi que des attentes traditionnelles concernant ce que les hommes et les femmes devraient faire de leur vie. Aujourd'hui, ils occupent tous les deux des emplois qu'ils aiment. Toutefois, leur parcours et leurs perspectives de retraite sont incertains. Il est important que les employeurs et les pouvoirs publics mettent en place des politiques permettant de choisir les décisions concernant la retraite, indépendamment des parcours professionnels.

Ignacio Cabib is Assistant Professor of Sociology and Public Health at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, in Santiago de Chile, and Associate Researcher at the Centre for Social Conflict and Cohesion Studies.

Ignacio tells us a story about two friends, Laura and Sophie. They have both similar political beliefs and social conditions but voted differently on a constitution draft referendum. How is it possible? This story focuses on the key role of social sciences impact on political campaigns of constitutional changes.

Elles ont toutes deux des opinions politiques et conditions sociales similaires, mais ont voté différemment lors d'un référendum sur un projet de nouvelle constitution. Comment cela est-il possible ? Cette histoire met l'accent sur le rôle clé de l'impact des sciences sociales dans les campagnes politiques de changements constitutionnels.

Cléolia Sabot est chercheuse à l’Université de Lausanne. Ses recherches s'intéressent aux enfants, notamment celles et ceux qui ont grandi dans une famille monoparentale.

Son récit est tiré de témoignages récoltés dans le cadre d'une enquête qui s'est penchée sur le parcours d'une vingtaine de familles. Le travail de Cléolia intègre directement les enfants dans les études sur la famille, en leur donnant la parole – en complément à la voix des parents – et permet d’articuler différents discours sur le parcours familial.

Comment les enfants participent-ils – directement ou indirectement – à l'organisation de leur quotidien et de la garde, en cas de séparation de leurs parents ? La construction du témoignage de Sam, personnage principal de l’histoire, repose sur des extraits anonymisés et condensés des enfants et jeunes rencontré·es.

Her story is based on testimonies collected in the context of a survey that examined the course of some twentyfamilies. Cléolia's work integrates children directly into family studies, giving them a voice - in addition to the voice of the parents - and making it possible to articulate different discourses on family life.

How do children participate - directly or indirectly - in the organisation of their daily lives and custody, in the event of their parents' separation? The construction of Sam's testimony, the main character, is based on anonymised and condensed extracts from the children and young people Cléolia met.
