    Introduction
Hey everybody, it’s Coach Edwards at LacrosseGoalieTips.com and LacrosseGoalieUniversity.com, and I got a question this week from Lauren. Lauren’s emailed me a couple of times, which I think is pretty cool. If you’ve emailed me once, don’t feel like you can’t email me again. I always love getting questions and I do spend a lot of time emailing people back. Especially our Lacrosse Goalie University members. We do goalie critiques almost every week for some of our Diamond Members. For our Platinum Members, they get them once a month. If you need something like that, let me know. Check out our coaching tab on the website.
    Lauren’s Question
It’s Lauren from Long Island. I just started preseason practices, and I want to work on my clearing. I forget how long my shaft is, but my head is in the clips and I have hard mesh. I’m not sure which type of string would be the best for distance and accuracy. At the same time, I also don’t want balls bouncing out of my stick. Here’s some pictures of my stick. I hope you can email me back and inform me on what to do. I’m trying really hard to make my high school’s varsity team. I’m a smaller person, so I use a shallow pocket for an easier clear, but the ball bounces out when I go for a save.
The Benefit Of A Titanium Shaft
What I’m going to do now is I’m going to shift over to my desktop in a minute. So don’t go away right just yet. I’m going to shift to my desktop, and we’re going to go over the pictures that she sent me, which is pretty cool. First thing is I just want to address a couple things. First off, she forgets what her shaft is. Lauren, here’s the deal about shafts. Buy the cheapest, lightest shaft you can buy. She is a freshman/sophomore.
If you’re serious about lacrosse goaltending, I highly recommend buying a titanium shaft. Hands down. They’re pretty expensive, but it’ll be the last shaft you ever buy. If you’re a kid watching this and you want to try to talk your parents into this, just say, “Mom, Dad, I’m never going to have to buy another shaft. This is it”
    David Morrow’s Warrior Shaft
Stay away from carbon fibers and things along those lines, because they tend to get brittle and fall apart, and that’s not cool. I see parents spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars, almost every year, whereas if they finally make the jump to a titanium shaft, they will have it forever. Nice titanium shafts. I have first generation Warrior titanium shafts. That’s how David Morrow started Warrior, was a titanium shaft, and I still have two of them. And I think actually I bought a defensive length shaft and cut it in half, and then I had two shafts. So I want to just touch on that.
The Eclipse Head Versus The Nemesis For Girls
She’s got an Eclipse head. Love the Eclipse. My favorite – the Eclipse and the Nemesis, those are my two favorite heads,

  • Should You Gain Weight To Become A Better Lacrosse Goalie?

Coach Edwards explains the issues goalies may face with high metabolism and outlines a way they can use it to their benefit to train and become more explosive. Coach describes how goalies can not just gain weight, but train to become better goalies and gain explosive muscle power.
1:38 – Goalies with a high metabolism should look at Gordy Sheer as an example.
2:27 – Give your body good sources of protein so you can build muscle.
3:11 – If your metabolism is high, work on Olympic lifts and explosive training.
3:39 – The best diet and workout regimen for a lacrosse goalie with high metabolism.
4:52 – The goal isn’t just to gain weight – it’s to become an explosive goalie.
    Introduction
Hey everybody, it’s Coach Edwards with LacrosseGoalieTips.com and
LacrosseGoalieUniversity.com. Welcome to our new Lacrosse Goalie University members for this season. I’m looking forward to working with you. As always, it’s a labor of love and I just love hearing from everybody from across North America and across the world. We’ve got a new member over in Sweden and one in England, and that makes me really happy. So thank you.
Question From A Goalie With A High Metabolism
The question this week comes from a goalie who is 5’11 and about 132 lbs, I believe. He feels like he’s quite skinny, which he is. This guy is a sophomore in high school and his name will remain nameless because he’s a pretty prominent recruit. But here’s the thing. The question was, the goalie is kind of nervous, wary, very aware of the fact that he feels quite skinny and he wants to gain weight.
My question back is why are you just looking to gain weight? At the end of the day we want to be a better lacrosse goalie. And along those lines we want to be a better, more explosive goalie. We want to be a stronger goalie. Gaining weight is a byproduct of hopefully good training and a good diet. If the goal is just to gain weight, we could just eat pizza and do whatever.
    Gordy Sheer And High Metabolism
This goalie is very similar to a buddy of mine from my Olympic days. A guy named Gordy Sheer who was a drummer in a rock band, but Gordy was about 5’10 and about a buck twenty, twenty-five.
He had a metabolism like a racehorse. Basically Gordy could not get enough calories. Working with a nutritionist at the Olympic Training Center, they were recommending for Gordy, because he was burning so many calories, and his metabolism was so high. He was like a walking anatomy poster. You could see every vein, every muscle. It was pretty impressive. But they were recommending that he raw cookie dough, which is probably the most extreme caloric thing you could eat.
Get Good Protein So Your Body Can Build Muscle
Even for myself, when I was young, I would get to eating condensed milk in chocolate milk that was mixed with protein powder to get enough calories in. From a gaining weight perspective, if you have a high metabolism, a really high metabolism, you need calories. You want to keep those calories to good protein sources and good fat sources, because then the body has the building blocks with which to build muscle. That has to be coupled with high load or high explosive weight training.
    Olympic Lifting And Explosive Training
What I mean by explosive, as I mentioned in last week’s video, Olympic lifting, cleans, jerks, those types of things. However, they are Olympic lifts for a reason. They’re very technical and they are their own sport. So if you have no involvement in that, if you have no understanding of Olympic lifting, don’t try to start it now. The season’s coming around the corner. I would rather you stick to heavy deadlifts, heavy squats, heavy benchpress, heavy overhead press – watch your shoulders.

    Introduction
Hey everybody, it’s Coach Edwards at LacrosseGoalieTips.com and LacrosseGoalieUniversity.com, and I got an email this week from a coach at a high school in upstate New York. They’ve got a big game coming up their first week in March, and the question was how to get the team into the best shape possible prior to that first game, because this is a rival. They really want to give them a hard time. Last year when they played this team, they kind of petered out at the end of their third or fourth quarter. They gave them a good run in the first half, but then the wheels just kind of came off in the second half, and the coach is really attributing this to fatigue.
0:50 What The Team Does Pre-Season Makes A Difference
My question, when it goes to something like this, is what is the team doing before lacrosse season even starts? I emailed this coach, and just confirmed that sure enough, this team is pretty much what a lot of other high school teams are like. Half the team is playing a winter sport, so for his guys, a majority of them are playing basketball, so they’re coming off a tough basketball season. And the other half of the team isn’t really doing a whole heck of a lot. They’ve got their sticks in their hands like once a week, and within that group there are some guys that are just getting off the couch in the winter. They’ve been playing a lot of Xbox, a lot of DS, getting their thumbs in shape for the season.
1:35 The Biggest Mistake A Lacrosse Team Can Make Before The Season
Here’s the challenge that I find most teams really have and the mistakes they make coming into the season. When lacrosse season starts, and that first day of practice comes and either you’re maybe in the gym and there’s still snow on the ground depending on where these guys are, they’re in upstate New York obviously. The coaches are thinking, “We’ve got to get our team in shape for the season.” The challenge there is they then treat everybody the same.
From the guys that have been playing DS all winter to the guys who were playing basketball, they’re all running the same drills, they’re running the same amount of gassers, they’re running the same 3 mile runs or whatever that a team uses to kind of whip their team into shape prior to the season. And that, I feel, is the biggest mistake a team can make.
2:21 Athletes Should Be Trained Individually For Team Success
You really need to train your athletes individually in order to have team success. Whenever I’ve been involved in team programs, my usual fallout with those programs comes when the program is program specific and not athlete specific. I actually have a website called AthleteSpecific.com, where I talk about athletic training type principals. If you want to check that out, go check that out and get the free audio I have over there.
In this case, it requires a little bit of extra work, a little extra thinking,
