In this episode, Ladey Adey and the book academy are joined by Diane Hull. 

Diane is a retired Primary School Teacher, living in Todmorden on the Lancashire / Yorkshire border. After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a B A (Hons) Early Childhood Studies First Class, lead to 30 years in education.

Diane worked as a Nursery teacher and Foundation Stage Leader until her retirement. However, she has bought all this experience into her writing.

Diane talks us through her series of award-winning books, including Be Happy to Be You, Be Proud to Be Blue, and We’re On Our Way to School. 

Be Proud to Be Blue book has been awarded a Purple Dragonfly Award and is dyslexic inclusive. Baby Bird series of books helps start conversations with children about being self-aware, accepting who they are, and helping children develop their potential and celebrate their differences.

Diane's Top Tip: Picture books are a partnership between text and illustrations. The rhythm of the story has to sound right and children love to join in with repeated refrains.

In this episode, Ladey Adey interviews Sue Trusler.

Following retirement in 2018, at age 55, she returned to her passion for art and built her studio, where she creates beautiful watercolor paintings and pen and ink pointillism drawings.

Growing up in the Victorian seaside town of Penarth, Sue then married and now lives in Cardiff. After a busy career in Finance, when both children flew the nest, it was time for a new chapter in her life. The opportunity to enjoy her hobbies, photography, reading, playing the piano, and exploring the countryside. 

During this episode, we hear how purchasing a small Narrow Boat, with an expectation of relaxing cruises and appreciating a slower pace of life, leads to fate playing a wild card. To complete her dream, Sue wanted traditional roses reinstated on their boat. With no previous art skills, she not only painted their boat but went on to paint canal roses everywhere.

Sue's new passion lead to exciting opportunities and experiences. When an artistic door opened, it revealed a whole new skill set to be explored. At the start of this journey Sue discovered there was a gap in the market, she couldn't find a book to assist with painting her Narrow Boat. After a Zoom talk, it was suggested that Sue write a book to help others. Within 5 months Sue designed, wrote, and published her book - Time To Start Your Art. 

Sue's book starts at the very beginning, introducing Canal Art and techniques. The book is designed for amateur artists, inspiring and arming them with knowledge for them to start their art.

Sue is proof that her advice is true "Write about something you feel passionate about and it will resonate throughout your book"

In this episode, Ladey Adey interviews Rhona Morrison about her book - I don't talk to dead bodies - The Curious Encounters of a Forensic Psychiatrist.

Doctor Rhona Morrison is a retired consultant forensic psychiatrist from Scotland. Rhona spent more than 30 years working in the NHS with mentally disordered offenders. She was affectionately named ‘Dr. M’ by her clinical team, and it stuck. 

Following retirement in 2018, at age 55, she returned to her passion for art and built her studio, where she creates beautiful watercolor paintings and pen and ink pointillism drawings.

In addition to her passion for art, Dr. Rhona has recently completed writing her memoir, "I don’t talk to dead bodies... the curious encounters of a forensic psychiatrist". It is due for publication in the summer of 2022.

During this episode, Dr. Rhona shares insights into the making of a forensic psychiatrist and some of the bizarre, hilarious, and heart-warming encounters along the way. She is passionate about de-stigmatisation of mental illness and invites us to meet the human beings behind the headlines who have learned to live with their illness.

Rhona confesses to being a reluctant academic but her favourite quote is "I came, I saw, I conquered" - Julius Caesar". Rhona wrote this in all of my medical textbooks after she passed her exams. 

Rhona's tip for writing: Write with honesty and integrity and people will engage with you.

In this episode, Ladey Adey interviews Jerry Strayve Jr. 

Jerry talks us through his life, born to a military family, attending nine schools before entering college. 

Following service in the United States Marine Corps, he raised a family while working as a financial representative and serial entrepreneur.

Whilst raising his young children Jerry discovered his love for spinning a spontaneous tale. It wasn't long before his love for history and stories combined and he jumped into writing. 

Jerry started with fiction, works include the first two books in a four-book series, Broxton's Century. Book three in the series will be published in February 2023.

During this podcast predominantly hear about the book Broken Promises. 

40 years previously Jerry had served with Ted Blickwedel when they were both young lieutenants in the Marine Corps.

When their paths crossed again, they combined their knowledge and experiences to write the book Broken Promises, "Witness the Heroic yet devastating crusade by WHISTLEBLOWER, combat veteran and retired Marine Corps LtCol Ted Blickwedel"
