Some crimes have no punishment. Some battles never end. Five years ago, successful architect Wade Benson killed a young woman when he fell asleep at the wheel. His punishment: two days in jail for every year of his probation. But for one friend of the victims family - an ex-marine named Darryl Potter - this punishment isnt enough. Potter sets out to even the score by kidnapping Bensons 20-year-old daughter. Its a bad, bad plan, and only Mike Barlowe, Potters former combat buddy, knows how to stop it. With a beautiful news reporter, the cops, and a bounty hunter on Potters tail, Barlowe races to head off his troubled friend before innocent people get hurt. The hunters and the hunted plunge north into Minnesotas Lake Country, each with their own ambitions and demons, each headed for a violent collision - and for one horrifying moment of life or death.

Sean Doolittle's writing rocks
Sean Doolittle is a very good writer who makes his characters jump off the page. All of his books are enjoyable reads.
Well-Deserved Award Winner
Are Sean Doolittle's books the best-kept secret in thriller-dom? If so, maybe it's because he doesn't write about guys who are going to save the world. Or maybe it's because he doesn't set his books in New York or Paris or Shanghai. Doolittle writes about Midwesterners who seem real, down-and-outers who find themselves embroiled in something they shouldn't be. Each sentence of Lake Country ratcheted up the suspense and made me turn the pages faster and faster. In any case, this book should not be a secret. It won the International Thriller Writers' Award for Best Paperback Original. Read it and you'll see why.
Terrific read!
Sean Doolittle did not disappoint me with his latest book, Lake Country. Sean keeps the story moving with a healthy dose of tension and subtle surprises along the way. A master wordsmith, Sean uses brevity and character to keep the reader engaged. If you've read his other novels, you'll enjoy this one. If this is your first Doolittle read, it won't be your last.
Regional Locale adds interest
Characters in the novel are well drawn though a bit simplified. We see the young reporter, the bounty hunter with focus on public relations, vets with PTSD managing in differing ways. But the interactions and glimpses we see are believable. The "villain" in the less-than-willing numbers racketeer and his 'gangster' team mate are less dimensional but they serve the story well.
It drew me in
Lake country is a solid thriller/crime novel. It drew me in slowly with a great set up and the surprises kept coming. It's not a breathless, over the top book straining for thrills, but one of escalating tension and believeable characters.
Doolittle is a master of the straight ahead, engaging crime novel and he does it yet again with this one.
