In the second beatitude, Jesus say those who mourn are blessed and will be comforted - but how?  And with what measure?  Listen as Scripture continues to refocus our view and perspective through the lens of the Gospel.  

The church from the first century to the twenty-first century, from Laodicea to Lake Worth, perpetually needs Jesus' reminder that the kingdom of heaven belongs to the poor in spirit.

In the preaching of John and the baptism of Jesus, many themes of King Jesus and his kingdom are intertwined and displayed: his example and our obedience, our repentance and his righteousness, and much more.  John prepared the way of the Lord in his day and we are called to a similar preparation and pointing to Jesus, in ours. 

In a way we all live "after Jesus was born in Bethlehem" (Matt. 2:1), but what does such living look like?  This text helps us see some of what came to pass at the birth of Jesus Christ and what it still means for us today. 

Scripture encourages us to bring our entire selves before God, even hard questions and raw emotions.  As Eugene Peterson once remarked, "the totality of God's concern is with the totality of our humanity."
