Lake Texoma Fishing Update: Stripers, Cats, and Crappie Thrive in Mild January Conditions

Listen Later

As of January 18, 2025, Lake Texoma is offering some excellent fishing opportunities. Here’s what you need to know:

First, the lake level is at 616.51 feet, which is slightly above normal, and the water temperature is around 53°F, with clear conditions[3].

For striper fishing, it's an excellent time. These fish are actively taking live bait, particularly live shad, around channels, ledges, and points. You can also use soft plastics, which will become even more effective as the temperatures drop. Keep an eye out for gulls on the main lake and pelicans in the coves to locate active fish. Stripers are being found on deep flats and ledges in 35-60 feet of water[1][3].

Catfishing has slowed a bit as the fish move toward the rivers with the inflow of water. However, smaller blues are still schooled along the bluffs in 30-50 feet of water. Use gizzard shad or cut rough fish to drift flats in 25-45 feet of water[1].

Crappie fishing is fair, with fish located near brush and structure around coves and points in 18-25 feet of water. Hair jigs and small shad are producing great results[1][3].

For bass fishing, target fish moving off points to secondary ledges and humps. Use plastics and slow-moving baits off the banks in 8-15 feet of water. On sunny days, rocky coves are a good spot as bass will pull up to feed in the warmer shallows[1].

As for hot spots, consider Eisenhower State Park Bluffs on the Texas side, Denison Dam, and North Island on the Oklahoma side. West Burns Run in Oklahoma is also a good location for stripers[4].

The sunrise today is at around 7:30 AM, and the sunset will be at about 5:30 PM. The weather is mild, which is helping to keep the fish active.

Given the current conditions, live shad and soft plastics are your best bets for stripers, while gizzard shad and cut bait are good for catfish. For crappie, hair jigs and small shad are the way to go.
