Psalm 36 concluded with a provocative vision of the end of the wicked: "There [Look!] the evildoers lie fallen; they are thrust down, unable to rise" (36:12). Psalm 37 is written to concerned believers who look around and see none of that happening. In their view, the wicked often seem to be winning. David's wisdom reveals four crucial responses for such situations.

The Love Of God

In Psalm 36, David writes his own beautiful ballad of God’s incomprehensible love. It’s a psalm intended for corporate worship from its very inception. It was sent to Israel’s choirmaster by “the servant of the LORD,” a title teeming with Messianic significance, so that God’s people would always sing of God’s saving love displayed in the work of his promised King.

When Enemies Surround

In Psalm 35, David writes from another difficult circumstance. Enemies are pursuing him, companions are betraying him, and rivals are conspiring against him. None of that, in this case, is for just cause. David here represents God's Righteous King who unjustly suffers at the hands of those who do not fear the Lord. Typologically, the Psalm points us to Jesus, who in John 15 claims to be its true fulfillment. Again, David wrote the Psalm, Jesus fulfilled the Psalm, and the church sings the Psalm.

Praise To The God Of Life

The setting of this song reflects on a time when David was as good as dead, facing the judgment of God for his sin. When David repented, God's anger was assuaged, and He mercifully delivered David from death. In dedicating the temple, the king led his people in joyful worship for a life that will never come to an end. At the heart of the psalm is an invitation to join in the king's praise. It is a call for us to give praise to the God of life, for salvation from death is given to all who belong to God by faith. This life is provided through the greater David, Jesus Christ, who ultimately fulfills the psalm. All of King Jesus' people may then join in His song of praise.

Taste and See

"The power of the psalm derives from the authority of the singer, the King, whose exhortation and teaching to his people is rooted in his personal experience of salvation. The final test must not simply be that God has rescued this King from danger and death but that God has saved a final King out of death itself. The psalm has two clear sections. I want you to hear both as a personal call from King Jesus, for the salvation of God's people is bound up in the salvation of their King.

Blessed To Be His

The context of Psalm 33 is not all rainbows and roses. At various places we find the people in particular need, even deliverance from death. The blessed people are in a season of waiting on the Lord, hoping and trusting in Him for help. This song of joyful worship then transcends our circumstances. Its truths are relevant in seasons of plenty and seasons of famine. The blessed state of God's people remains when life is easy and when it's hard. Herein lies the purpose of the psalm. It equips us to joyfully worship the Lord at all times, for we are truly blessed to be His people.

The Joy Of Being Forgiven

Psalm 31 represents the prayer of the weary soul who is yet strong in faith. Are you in distress? Are you desperate for God’s intervention? Psalm 31 is for you, and God invites you to pray in this way.

Faithful To The End

Life in this fallen world is hard for everyone, but the Christian experience is one of exile. This life of exile comes with suffering for the name of Christ, and though the obstacles and their intensity vary, each day comes with its own dangers, toils, and snares. Through the hardships, the temptation to turn back and leave the faith can seem impossible to resist. So in this final section of this letter, God calls us through Peter's writing to persevere—to be faithful to the end.

Elders In Exile

It is essential that those leaders rightly care for God's people and that churches appropriately submit to those who faithfully fulfill the task. The text is written for the edification of the entire congregation, for churches must rightly understand the role of elders, what qualifies a man to serve as one, and how they are to then relate to those they call to fill the office.
