War. Riots. Inflation. Hate. Scandal. Every news cycle seems to carry another load of disappointment. No wonder phrases like “Losing hope in humanity” are more and more common. This Easter, we go back to the first one and enter into that all too familiar feeling: Hopelessness. The first Easter, there were no Christians. Just a bunch of distraught, disappointed, disillusioned disciples. The story has a happy ending… but that ending is not found in a sacred text, religious leader, or spiritual process. It’s found in a person… and that person changes everything.

On the way, we discover the idea of hell was a breath of fresh air to the first century people on the margins. We also explore what our views of hell reveal about what God is like, and in the end, we realize clarity may not be the goal… but invitation is.

Some things are outside of our knowledge… and that is perfectly fine. We may not know how to perform open heart surgery… but as long as somebody does… we aren’t really interested in the details. Today Jesus encounters, deals with, and teaches on something most of us don’t think about often… but it is real, and alive in the background. And ignoring it… is a dangerous decision.

Some things become so common, they lose all power and significance, and we stop paying attention.
