What does it mean to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done”? In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches believers to keep praying even when answers seem delayed and circumstances appear unchanged. Praying for God’s kingdom means longing for His rule to become increasingly visible as people follow Christ, grow in obedience, and experience spiritual transformation. It also means surrendering our own plans to God and saying, “Your will, not mine.” Yet this bold prayer is paired with humility: “Lead us not into temptation.” Christians pursue spiritual growth while recognizing their weakness and dependence on God. The Lord’s Prayer teaches us to pray with persistence, surrender, and a deep desire to see God’s kingdom advance.
What does it mean to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”? The opening words of the Lord’s Prayer hold together two remarkable truths: through Jesus, believers can approach God personally as a loving Father, yet He remains the infinite and sovereign God of heaven. Jesus then teaches us to begin prayer by “hallowing” God’s name—recognizing, praising, and delighting in His greatness. Prayer is therefore more than bringing God our requests; it is worship. Praising God reorients our hearts, deepens our joy, and shifts our attention from the size of our problems to the greatness of the God who hears us.
