Today I am joined by Andrew Napier, the composer behind the project Noumenah. Andrew is a film composer based in Los Angeles who started creating and releasing music under the name Noumenah as a way of expressing musical ideas and techniques that didn’t fit into his professional life. Drawing from an eclectic blend of electronic genres and acoustic instruments, Andrew’s music is rich with sonic detail. During our conversation, Andrew and I discussed the recording process for Noumenah’s first album, how his background in film scoring shaped the project, and where he plans on taking the project next.

Today I am joined by Frank Meadows. Frank is a solo musician, improviser, composer, and songwriter. As a bassist and keyboardist, Frank is also supporting musician in the bands Putter, Fust, Colamo, Bellows, Small Wonder, and, full disclosure, Lamniformes.

But that’s not all! When he isn’t gigging, Frank books shows for artists like Kath Bloom, and works part time at Downtown Music Gallery, a record store that specializes in avant grade jazz and classical music.

Because Frank wears so many hats, I was delighted to talk to him about how all of these roles intersect, as well as his recent batch of solo releases.

In this episode I spoke to Eleni Sutter, the singer and primary songwriter for Byzmuti. Byzmuti’s debut album Tipota is difficult to describe in the best of ways. Over four tracks, Sutter and her top-notch band mix Neo-Soul influenced R&B with Greek folk music, psychedelic soundscapes, and hard progressive funk grooves. It is, without a doubt, a lot to take in on first listen but all of this musical excess is in support of Sutter’s fearless self-expression.

Over the course of our conversation we discuss the formation of Byzmuti’s live band, Sutter’s early influences in classical and jazz music, and the lyrical inspiration for the album.

In this episode I am joined by Joseph Hurtado, better known as the producer, engineer, and beat maker Saint Thrillah. Thrillah has been making beats both as a solo artist and with his younger brother, the rapper 303 BAM, for over a decade. I’m going to be very upfront with you, Thrillah and I go way back. The two of us have been friends since first grade and have remained friends ever since. Thrillah even played in a very early version of Lamniformes. Throughout the years we’ve always shared a love for each other’s music, but I am particularly excited about his most recent project, #SaintSundays. For the last few months Thrillah has dropped a new beat every Sunday, paired with haunting imagery inspired by his Catholic upbringing and his love for extreme metal. I was overjoyed to talk to Thrillah about this project as well as his evolution as an artist and his beat making process. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.

Today’s guest is Siddhu Anandalingam of the band Semaphore. Siddhu is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and self-recorder. On previous Semaphore projects, He wrote, performed and recorded all the material himself. But on their latest EP, “Leave With The Season” released earlier this year, he brought in the rest of his live band, including previous Lamniformes Radio guest Emmet Ceglia, to contribute to the creative process. The result is a five song collection that incorporates shoegaze, emo, and post-hardcore to address a period of loneliness and dissatisfaction in his life.

In this episode, we went track by track through the EP to spool out the band’s inspirations and intentions. We also talked about his early influences growing up in Bethesda, Maryland and Semaphore’s incredibly ambitious live cover of The Dillinger Escape Plan’s “Miss Machine.”

In the second episode of Lamniformes Radio, I spoke with Kira Clark and Keith McGraw of the indie pop band So Sensitive. We spoke about their debut album "Bedroom Drama," their thoughts on nostalgia in pop music, and the dissolution of their older, and much heavier project Muscle & Marrow.
