I talk with a friend and colleague who inspires and motivates others to be their best self through coaching & teaching. Coaching in the athletic sense - but also in education in its true roots of the word: to bring out that which lies within. He is someone who is committed to self-mastery and to be of better service to those around him - through reading, learning, experimenting, teaching & expression. Not only does this lifelong cultivation provide more fulfillment, but also leads us to finding freedom in living a lifestyle in which we thrive through pushing ourselves to grow. I hope you enjoy this conversation and harvest some inspiration to put on your own teacher or coach hat and give yourself permission to share your experience with your community...

In this episode, I talk with David who is a dear friend, mentor & elder that has been very inspiring for us on our own journey of cultivating a creative and resilient livelihood that flows with the nature within us. He shares about his journey from growing up with artistic parents, to traveling the world on scientific field expeditions, refining his art + craft of professional nature photography, family homesteading, his deep love of the natural world, to publishing many books over the years to share these beautiful stories. Don’t miss this one…
David Cavagnaro was born and raised in California. He spent much of his childhood roaming the hills, exploring creeks, meadows and beaches, and backpacking in the mountains. Fascinated by insects and plants, he became intimately familiar with what he later called “the land of the small,” - by the age of l4 he had his first 35mm camera for recording what he found there. A decade of international travel as a scientific field worker, educational tourism leader, and photography instructor greatly expanded his knowledge of natural history opportunities to photograph. Photo assignments and seminar teaching led David to some of the most beautiful wilderness regions of the United States. His photographic work has become widely published in nature calendars and magazines, including Audubon, National and International Wildlife, Natural History, Ranger Rick, and Life., culminating in the publication of five books.
David is also the founder of the Pepperfield Project, a Non-Profit Organization located in Decorah, IA, promotes the health and development of body, mind, and spirit through food and gardening in harmony with nature. Pepperfield Farm serves as a living example of wellness, including an environmentally sensitive lifestyle and its symbiotic relationship with the surrounding community and natural ecosystems. The farm serves as an education and retreat center focused on wellness and the teaching of intelligent choices that support sustainable systems. In this show, I talk with Christine about her work as a connector and storyteller in growing a bioregional, place-based business around sustainable flowers. She connects local farmers to a market of designers like herself that begin cultivating an awareness of some incredible benefits of sourcing locally in their work. We have enjoyed her work and story since we met many years back when we were vendors at the same farmer's market together. We later got the chance to integrate her incredible floral design for our own wedding. Listen to the full conversation to learn more about her and crafting a creative livelihood that can be applied to just about any kind of value based business.
Christine Hoffman runs Foxglove Market, the Twin Cities first exclusively local and chemical-free florist, Foxglove is more than just a flower studio. Christine is a slow flowers advocate striving to form a strong community of sustainable flower farmers, small business owners, and folks who care about supporting these mindful endeavors. By providing a local, sustainable option to traditional flowers, putting a premium on collaboration, and reaching out to the community, I hope to foster change. Her design world does not necessarily differentiate between flower, flora, weed, herb, or edible. Rather, these elements all merge at a lovely and intriguing intersection of flowers, food, and found objects. Everything interacts and is connected, just like the natural world. Her work is about creating an environment, evoking feelings, and finding beauty in the unexpected. Learn more at: Foxglove Market > and on Instagram at @foxglovemarket

In this conversation, I talk with Nick about his journey from growing up in the city, living in the suburbs, outgrowing his suburban Permaculture homestead, to then moving with his family to some beautiful land in rural NW Wisconsin. Since making the journey, they’ve lived together in a camper, built a tiny house, grown hemp, planted a kitchen garden, built a chickshaw for their chicken flock, connected with the local Amish community, raised livestock, AND managed to keep their family of 5 healthy and happy living in close quarters together throughout this journey. They’re off-grid out of necessity and actively teaching their growing family the importance of determination and resilience to make a change in your life and grow your dreams into reality. I’m honored and inspired by their story and hope you enjoy learning more about them and their regenerative farming, homesteading & lifestyle.
Nick Colacci is a husband and father of three. Born and raised in the city of Minneapolis. A self employed tradesman, painter, handy man, Permaculturalist, homesteader and musician. In 2019 he and his family moved to 45 acres of raw land in north west WI. Working with his wife Shauna they are transforming conventional AG land into a diverse polyculture of plants and animals. Guided by the permaculture principals they are slowly building a homestead that will supply the family and community with healthy food and medicine while enriching the environment. Contact us on our website to connect with Nick and learn more about their work.
