What’s the difference between a great and elite program in college football? Those answers were clear Saturday afternoon. James Franklin said five years ago, following a one-point loss to Ohio State, the Nittany Lions were done being a great team. They wanted to close the gap on the elite. This time, the seventh ranked Nittany Lions lost their seventh straight to the No. 3 Buckeyes. The final deficit was eight points — exactly the average margin of defeat in the series over the past seven years.USC wants to be great in the Pac-12. It saw elite once again when it lost its third straight game to back-to-back Pac-12 champions Utah. Tennessee hopes to become elite under Josh Heupel. Alabama scored 27 straight second half points to show the Vols still have a long way to go.Clemson? The Tigers were elite. But they can no longer claim that title after a double-overtime loss to Miami, which started its backup quarterback. The Tigers have now dropped three games before November for the second time in three years.
