If you've ever seen those villainous cowboys on television, you are probably confident you know all about them. Think again because many of the "outlaws of the Wild West were men and women" and some of their crimes were shocking beyond words. Jesse James was one of those cowboys who simply wasn't as nice as many think he was. He was supposedly like "Robin Hood, robbing from the rich to give to the poor." Wrong, dead wrong. Jesse James was a nothing more than a "cold-blooded killer" who "robbed, murdered, and mutilated" people. He certainly was no Robin Hood, nor was he any kind of a hero.

There were a lot of shocking crimes in the Wild West and Big Nose George Parrott bragged on his one too many times. Big Nose and his gang were robbers and murderers who dismembered their victims. Fair is fair and after he was hung he somehow ended up as a pair of shoes. Yes, a pair of shoes! Shocking, but true. Women wanted to get in on the act as well. This was a pretty comprehensive picture book for elementary and middle school students covering the skeletal system. The text was lucid and the photos and illustrations were complementary. This would be a nice addition to any textbook chapters covering anatomy, or just for an informative interesting read to help students learn more about the human body.

Nice book for teen-girls!

AMAZING READ

An absolutely fantastic book. I'm a big fan of Cathy Cassidy's work and this is most definitely my favourite that I have read so far. Cherry gets herself caught up in fantasy and lies and the line between reality and make-believe fades. An exeptional story of learning to fit in, family and romance. I just couldn't tear my eye's from the pages.I look forward to reading more of the lives of the Chocolate Box Girls.

Best Book Ever!

I LOVE this book! It seemed to go by so quickly because it was so good! I personally think that this is Cathy Cassidy's BEST book. I loved it so much that I read it in the morning while getting ready for work! It has romance, adventure and drama. It was very well written and has wonderful characters and description. You feel as if you are the main character. I would DEFINITLEY reccomend this book. It was a joy ti read this incredible book!

When our country was first formed, our founding fathers got together and wrote the U.S. Constitution, a document that "explains how the men thought the U.S. government should work." The government comprises three parts or branches, the executive, judicial, and legislative. The legislative branch makes the laws that we must follow in order to keep our country working smoothly. The legislative branch, or the Congress, is comprised of two parts. One is the House of Representatives and the other is the Senate. Representation varies in that each state has two senators while the "House has 435 members."

Congress has many jobs including controlling trade, making laws about money, and they even "have the power to declare war." As legislators, senators and representatives need to work on bills that may or may not become federal laws. Federal laws apply to all of our citizens while state laws only apply to their residents. In this book you will be able to follow some students who learn how to "turn an idea into a law." This is a very nice, basic introduction to animal science. Do you know what endotherms are?

Mammals have several distinguishing characteristics that make them different from other creatures. For example most people can easily figure out that a snake is not a mammal, but what about a platypus? "Mammals are animals that have fur or hair." Naturally some have more than others. If you take a look at some of the animals in this book you can easily see that a squirrel has plenty of fur, but you would have to know where to look for hair on a baby dolphin. All mammals are endotherms (warm blooded). In other words they produce their own body head and "their temperature always stays about the same."

Mammals' habitats are wide reaching. Some live in deserts, some in mountains, while others like whales live in the oceans. As diverse as they all seem to be all "mammals drink milk from their mother" and most "grow inside their mother's bodies." In this book you will learn that mammals breathe air, how some lay eggs, what they eat (herbivores, carnivores and omnivores), their habitats and a few other interesting facts. Can you name a mammal that flies?

This is a very basic age appropriate introduction to animal science. I like the fact that even though some of the scientific terms such as "endotherm" may be difficult for some of the readers, the author has chosen to use the proper scientific terminology. The words are not italicized in the text, but are included in the glossary. The mammal characteristics are not listed all at once, but rather are presented in a nice story-like format as the book progresses. Every page has an appealing photograph illustrating the discussion. This is one of six in the series, "Meet the Animal Groups." In the back of the book is a glossary, index and additional recommended website resources.

Loved by All!

Recommended by an English professor, I ordered this comic book version of Beowulf to supplement my reading of the original. Not a comic book reader, I was greatly impressed by the compressed version of the Beowulf tale this book presents, and would recommend it for anyone wanting to introduce themselves, or their children to this classic adventure tale. My son (6) promptly stole this off my desk, and reluctantly returns it to me, only to steal it again the next day. I would also like to add that the end of this book includes excellent source information, and additional suggestions if you (or your children) are interested in finding out more about this tale and time period.

I've ordered some others in this series and hope they will be as good!

Very fun, quick version of the old Scandinavian saga. I bought and donated two copies to the school I work at and already kids are devouring them.

It was action packed all around with mild violence I love it. I wood really recommend this book to people whoa don't want to read novels but graphic novels.

A Classroom success

My Special Education11th grade class loved reading this before reading Beowulf. An excellent addition to the reading. Good graphics and storyline.

My Son Loved It!

This is a very nice comic book (graphic novel) version of the Beowulf story. My 10-year-old son LOVED it. He is normally a reluctant reader, but he read this in less than a day! This is a perfect book for reluctant readers who enjoy the fantasy genre.

Real life zombies and the "ick" factor

Kids are horrified, mystified and thoroughly engrossed in Rebecca L. Johnson's factual and startling revelations from the world of nature. Kids I know wanted to go right out and search for zombie flies and other creatures. The information is detailed and effectively presented. Even a high school friend insisted on reading this cover to cover. An outstanding nonfiction read for anyone interested in the natural world.

The Guinness Book of World Records ain't got nothing on this

There's this podcast I like to listen to called "RadioLab", which is essentially just a show for people who like kooky science but are still a little foggy on what exactly Einstein's Theory of Relativity actually means or why the sun is hot. Science for the English majors, let's call it. Often the show will come up with really original stories, like the guy who purposefully gave himself tapeworms to cure his asthma (it worked). That story came from a show about parasites and it was accompanied by these strange unnerving stories about insects and viruses and worms that could turn their hosts into . . . well . . . zombies, basically. And though I am a children's librarian, the thought never occurred to me that these stories could, combined with others of the same ilk, create the world's most awesome work of nonfiction. Fortunately for all of us, Rebecca L. Johnson has not my shortsightedness. In "Zombie Makers: True Stories of Nature's Undead" you will meet a whole range of horrifying creatures. It is, without a doubt, probably the grossest book for kids I've ever read. And boy howdy let me tell you I have read a LOT Of gross books in my day.

What do you think of when you think of zombies? Do you think of lurching undead ready to feast on your braaaaaains? Or do you think of something a little more insidious like the REASON those zombies don't seem to have a lot of will of their own? As it happens, zombies are real. Not in the corpse-walker sense, necessarily, but in nature there are plenty of creatures willing to make others into their mindless slaves. Meet the hairworm Paragordius Triscuspidatus, which can convince a perfectly healthy cricket to drown itself. Or Toxoplasma Gondii which, aside from being the reason you're not supposed to let pregnant women near cat poop, turns rats into suicidal kitty lovers. Page by page author Rebecca Johnson presents us with examples of evolution gone amuck. Zombie makers exist, it's true, and as their hosts we'd better learn as much as we can about them before they get to us next!

Zombies actually get a lot of play in children's literature these days. Insofar as I can tell there are two ways to play them. They can't be romantic like vampires or other members of the monster family so they must either be funny or horrifying. Funny is the route that I'd say 85% of kids' books about zombies go.
