In this hour, Gabor Maté is a physician at OnSite, a Vancouver detox facility and the only supervised injection site in North America. He's also the author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. He tells Jim Fleming that addicts are always the victims of abuse, and addiction is far more common in our society than we want to admit.
Next, Mary Karr's first memoir was The Liar's Club and a best-seller. The new one is called Lit and chronicles her alcoholism and alcoholic family. She talks with Steve Paulson.
Then, Marshall Boswell, author of Understanding David Foster Wallace recalls that writer's fictional take on Alcoholics Anonymous.
After that, Dr. Olivier Ameisen was a cardiologist until his alcoholism left his life in tatters. He found relief with a drug that eliminates his cravings for alcohol. But it's an old drug, so there's no profit incentive to research this new use. He tells the story to Anne Strainchamps, and in his book The End of My Addiction. It's now out in paperback under the title Heal Thyself.
Finally, Jason Spingarn-Koff is a film-maker whose new documentary is called Life 2.0. It tells the stories of several people who immerse themselves in the Second Life computer game some to the point where they confuse their game life with their real life. Jim Fleming talks with the film-maker and we hear excerpts. [Broadcast Date: February 4, 2011]

    Publisher's Summary:
In this hour, comic books used to be for kids. Now graphic novels are one of the most popular new forms of literature. Cartoonist Jules Feiffer started on his path to fame in the 1950s with a cartoon strip for The Village Voice that eventually won him a Pulitzer Prize. He talks with Steve Paulson about his memoir Backing into Forward and how comic books were one of his greatest escapes as a kid
Next, not all illustrators agree on what to call graphic novels or when the first one appeared, but most agree that the man who brought them into the mainstream was Will Eisner. Michael Schumacher recently published a biography of Eisner called A Dreams's Life in Comics and tells Jim Fleming Eisner always believed in the literary potential of sequential art.
Then, Denis Kitchen founded Kitchen Sink Press in 1969, and he was the publisher who brought Eisner's work to the public. He is also an illustrator and has published some of his early work in The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen. He tells Anne Strainchamps about his drawings and his music.
And finally, R. Crumb is widely known as the author of Mr Natural, and The Book of Genesis. His latest project is a compilation of his daughter's drawings called Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist. Robert Crumb and Sophie Crumb tell Steve Paulson about her development and work. Title: Studio 360: Baitz, Spark, Frankfurt Kitchen
    Author: Kurt Andersen
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-29-11
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
In Jon Robin Baitz's new play, Other Desert Cities, a novelist returns home to her prominent California Republican parents with the manuscript of a new book: a memoir filled with very dirty laundry. Kurt talks to Baitz about how this combination of tension, comedy, and politics has become the playwright's specialty. Baitz created ABC's Brothers and Sisters, about a grown-up family full of smart, strong personalities in crisis.
Then, to celebrate Studio 360s first decade on air, we present Spark: How Creativity Works, a new book published by HarperCollins and written by the show's first executive producer, Julie Burstein. Over the years, scores of America's greatest filmmakers, writers, musicians, and artists have revealed their creative processes and inspiration for listeners. Burstein shares some of their best stories about childhood.
And, kitchen designer Lyn Peterson says that everything we take for granted can be traced back to the Frankfurt Kitchen, created by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in the late 1920s. It's the mother of all modern kitchens, and an original version was recently acquired by New York's MoMA. [Broadcast Date: January 29, 2011]

Then, wrapping your brain around the nature of time and the existence of multiple dimensions is a challenge, but comedian-musician Reggie Watts doesn't blink: he takes on mind-wrenching questions of theoretical physics in a fully-improvised song. Reggie joins Kurt and astrophysicist Janna Levin onstage to puzzle out how the universe works.
And, as events unfolded in Arizona this week, novelist Walter Kirn turned to Twitter to express what he was seeing and feeling.
