    Publisher's Summary:
Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece of wit and perception, perfectly exposing the mannered social scene of Jane Austen's England. This was an era when young ladies were carefully groomed for matrimony and little else, so Mrs Bennet is eager to see at least some of her five daughters married off. But the various temperaments and spirits of Elizabeth and her sisters, not to mention their precarious social standing, means the quest for love and happiness is not without setback. Meeting snobbery, prejudices, and the likes of Mr Collins, Mr Wickham, and a certain Mr Darcy along the way, the listener too will be swept up in a joyous tide of romance, desire, and satire as relevant and entertaining today as when first published.

I wanted to love it, but I couldn't keep up. No enthusiansm, all the characters ran together! READ THE BOOK. Don't bother even trying to follow this version!!! Waste of money!
    Perfection.
Joanna Lumley and Jane Austen are two of my absolute favourites. It's winning combination. Lovely story, well abridged and excellently performed.
    Over too quick
Enjoyed Joanna Lumley narrating this classic..... Just seemed to be over too soon. I dislike being told how many words I must use in a review!!

    Title: Ivanhoe
    Author: Sir Walter Scott
    Narrator: Frederick Davidson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 19 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-04-04
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 187 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
During the reign of Richard I, Wilfred of Ivanhoe earns his father's disapproval by falling in love with Rowena, his father's ward. His father had planned to wed her himself, and reestablish the Saxon line.
Ivanhoe serves with Richard I during the Crusades, while the King's brother attempts to take the throne for himself in his brother's absence. When Richard I and Ivanhoe return, a series of adventures takes place against the backdrop of a tournament where Knights Templar are entered into contests. Ivanhoe catches the eye of Rebecca, a beautiful and courageous Jew; he is taken prisoner, along with his father and hers, and Rowena as well; and they rely upon one Locksley (Robin Hood) and his band of outlaws to set them free. When Rebecca is subsequently charged with witchcraft, she asks Ivanhoe to champion her in a trial by combat. But have his affections shifted, or does he still love Rowena?
Sir Walter Scott's fanciful, vivid reinterpretation of medieval life makes for a successful novel that blends fact, myth, and romance.

    A great classic romance/adventure
This classic epic novel, written in 1819, was one I really enjoyed reading.
The story is set in medieval England. King Richard lies in prison in Europe on his voyage from the Crusades. Meanwhile, the Saxons and Normans are fighting over the remnant of England.
Ivanhoe, a disinherited son of a noble who was also on the Crusades, returns disguised as the Disinherited Knight. Together with the help of a mysterious Black Knight, they fight members of the Knight?s Templars, rescue the fair Rowena, whom Ivanhoe has fallen in love with, and perform other feats of heroism.
This is a great adventure novel: a disinherited knight who is forced to fight several times when the odds are against him in order to win his love. Many characters are featured as well, including Robin Hood and his merry men. Any reader with an interest in chivalry, medieval times, English royal history, or good ol? fight scenes will appreciate this novel.
The book does feature a character worth mentioning: Isaac is an elderly Jewish man, and he has a daughter, Rebecca, who falls in love with Ivanhoe. Though the anti-Semitic rhetoric by some of the villainous characters runs pretty thick at times (this does take place during the Crusades, after all), it?s pretty clear the author despises such treatment. In actuality, Rebecca turns out to be the strongest heroine of the novel.
It is clear why this book is still so popular. It?s a great story, with great heroes (and even better villains). You will really enjoy this book.
Frederick Davidson's voice is perfect for this role. He brings each of the many characters to life distinctly, and his depiction of the villains is especially good. I strongly recommend this recording
    A great listen
This was my first audiobook. I was determined to begin listening to all the classics that I never have time to actually read. I searched for the longest book that I could find that seemed interesting and "Ivanhoe" fit the bill.
I was truly impressed by the story. First I had to wait for an hour to get through the introduction and the forward, which didn't bode well for keeping my interest in audiobooks. After this however, the story began and soon I found myself listening at every spare moment.
It is a tale of knights and chivalry.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." So begins this classic, one of the most beloved novels of all time. Charles Dickens brings the French Revolution to life through such vivid characters as Charles Darnay, the Old Doctor, Sydney Carton and Lucy Manette. The action peaks with the storming of the Bastille, the dreaded symbol of government authority. And the blade of La Guillotine falls again...

    Editorial Reviews:
Among the most talented and influential voices to grace the audiobook format, Shakespearean actor Frank Muller delivers an electric performance of a story that demands it. Urgency and tumult seem to bellow forth from the indefatigable Muller as he untangles the web of conflict that drives Dickens' historical epic. The French aristocracys self-satisfied arrogance is set in contrast with the outraged militance of the downtrodden peasantry. Muller gives a unique voice to each member of the warring classes while nevertheless betraying the selfish motives that bind them all. Dickens' competing lovers, the aristocratic Charles Darnay and his jealous doppelgänger, Sydney Carton, are by turn endowed with desperate passion and tender selflessness as they grapple with historical forces beyond their control.

Absolute literature...and a page turner at that!
This is my first time reading/listening to this famous novel. I was amazed at the gracious style that flowed and was so descriptive yet kept you entertained all the while. These characters became my friends and enemies and were a part of me for the 2 weeks it took to finish this in my car. It has all the excitement of a best seller drama yet at the end of the novel I was changed. That is literature.
The narator is absolutely excellent. His personas assumed throughout the peice were consistent and superb. This is a 10/10 and a must get!
    Beautiful writing, beautifully read.
A great listen. Dickens writes a fascinating window into a facinating time in history and the events are enlivened and given scale by the characters he draws. Like all Dicken's work, there is a lot of scene setting and build up but the wait is worthwhile.
The narration is clear and the characterisation is kept at the level where it assists understanding rather than getting in the way.
A very educational and enjoyable listen.
    Loved this book
One of the best books I have ever read. I started it years ago and couldn't get into it. Now, after learning a lot more about the French Revolution, I got it. Dickens is hard to beat as an author - so beautifully written! But the moral of the story is just so powerful. I recommend this to everyone who has any idea about the Fr. Rev., and if you don't, find out so you can enjoy this book. It is a classic for a reason.
I love Frank Muller, one of the best narrators out there. But I also have this book read by Martin Jarvis who is also very good, and actually has a little lighter quality to his voice, which is sometimes helpful in this rather dark novel..
    unforgettable
I first read this book in high-school, or should I say I first 'tried' to read this book in high-school. My young mind was unprepared, mostly because it had no patience for victorian-stlye long-winded descriptives of everything. Listening to it was a completely different experience.

    Title: The Sonnets
    Author: William Shakespeare

    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The 154 sonnets of William Shakespeare contain some of the best-known, most-quoted lines in the English language. This collection brings dozens of those immortal poems to vivid life. Included here are: Numbers 18 ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"), 130 ("My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun"), 147 ("My love is as a fever"), 151 ("Love is too young to know what conscience is"), and many more. Almost everything about the sonnets is controversial: the identity of the recipients, the young man and the Dark Lady, the dates the sonnets were written - and some even question if they were indeed written by the Bard. But their beauty and eloquence are beyond reproach.
    (P) Recorded Books, Inc.
    Editorial Reviews:
Rich in melody and wordplay, Shakespeare's sonnets are, of all his work, the best-suited to audio production - while also the most demanding in vocal delivery and interpretation. Woven through the sonnets, though in no organized or consecutive manner, is the most amazing personal story, a love triangle that's funny, shocking and weird - baring, or seeming to, the author's most intimate secrets. Helpful for those who stumble over arcane or changed word meanings is this selection of 60 sonnets with "footnotes," read by Frank Muller.

    Excellent Recording, Lousy Transfer
I enjoyed this recording many times when I got it from my local library on cassette, so I was eager to get it on Audible. Unfortunately, the digital conversion of this title is very poor, with low gain levels and compression problems that cause much of the speech to sound slurred. I would encourage audible to get a better master from Recorded Books and re-record these classic masterpieces read by the late Frank Muller.

    Publisher's Summary:
This novel tells the story of impoverished, embarrassment-prone Archibald "Archie" Moffam and his difficult relationship with his art-collecting, hotel-owning, millionaire father-in-law, Daniel Brewster, the father of Archie's new bride, Lucille. Archie's attempts to ingratiate himself with Brewster only get him further into trouble. The story takes place in New York City.
    Members Reviews:
    Still Delightful after a Century
Archie Mahoom (pronounced "Moom"), is a typical Wodehouse character--a member of the British upper classes, educated at Eton and Oxford, with no apparent professional skills. After serving in the infantry in World War I, Archie has to figure out what to do with himself.
Hoping for better prospects, he comes to the United States and visits some friends of his family. On the trip he meets--and promptly marries--Lucille Brewster, the daughter of a wealthy New York hotel owner. The young couple stays at the hotel wihile Archie looks for work.
Neither Archie nor his father-in-law knows what exactly Lucille sees in Archie. Readers wonder too, since Archie is not an intellectual giant and seems to be going nowhere in particular in life.
But as the book proceeds, we find that Archie has some fine qualities. He is outgoing and kind hearted , totally devoted to his wife, and quick to lend assistance to others. Among those he helps are a fellow veteran who, because of a war injury, cannot remember his name or anything that happened to him before the war.
There are lots of grim books about war veterans struggling to adjust to civilian life. This, of course, is not one of them. Rather than a chronicle of PTSD, it is a classic sitcom. Laughter may have been what people needed most of all after the First World War. We can still use some now.
A very early, less-than-mature work from the Master
This book's greatest value is that it provides insight into where the genius Wodehouse was early in his writing career. The flaws are too numerous to mention and the gems are few and far between. This book appears to have been complied from a series of loosely connected short stories based around a single, not-well-defined character. If I were an editor, I'm not sure I would recognize the latent genius of the author if I didn't know better. I don't think this book is even as well-written as Wodehouse's "Mike" school stories.
It's not Bertie and Jeeves, but it's not bad
This early Wodehouse novel, first published in 1921, is a fast, enjoyable read. It is, I think, the only appearance of Archie Moffam and it's easy to see why. Although the book provides a good display of Wodehouse's brilliant use of language and ingenious plotting, Archie is very similar to, but not as good as, Bertie Wooster -- Wodehouse's finest creation. Like Bertie, Archie is a bumbler and something less than a mental giant. He is also plagued by an obnoxious relative; in Archie's case, his father-in-law, rather than Bertie's infamous aunts. Part of the problem is that Archie, although English, lives in New York City, in a hotel suite provided by his American father-in-law. Most of Bertie's stories are set in England. That allows Wodehouse to bring in the members of the Drone's Club and other eccentrics inhabiting Wodehouse's cock-eyed version of Edwardian England.

    Release date: 07-19-12
    Publisher: The Copyright Group
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Adam Bede (1859), George Eliot's first full-length novel, marked the emergence of an artist to rank with Scott and Dickens. Set in the English Midlands of farmers and village craftsmen at the turn of the 18th century, the book relates a story of seduction issuing in 'the inward suffering which is the worst form of Nemesis'. But it is also a rich and pioneering record - drawing on intimate knowledge and affectionate memory - of a rural world that we have lost. The movement of the narration between social realism and reflection on its own processes, the exploration of motives, and the constant authorial presence all bespeak an art that strives to connect the fictional with the actual.

Her first Novel and possibly the best
I never was a re-reader. Until I met George Eliot (aka Mary Ann Evans). I have loved all her works but I keep returning to this one. Takes place in the late 1700âs in âHayslopeâ,a fictional village probably resembling something she lived in or near, in England. The story is about farm life, class distinctions, and the trauma of thoughtless acts and the prose throughout is beyond beautiful. Youâll want to be like Diana, youâll hope you arenât more like Hetty, and then upon yet another re-read, you may be concerned that you have some traits rather like Arthur D. Beautiful story, sad story, impossible story, resolved at the end, in the only possible solution; will leave you contented and wanting to read more of what she wrote.
    Mary Ann Nods
The dud among Eliot's novels, bound to fail because not the product of her lived experience but an attempt to write a "historical" novel a la Walter Scott.
I love George Eliot but the possibility that I'd ever reread this petrified "web of [wo]men" is absolute zero.
    Adam Bede
One of the most amazing books I have ever read. Way to long tho in my opinion. But kept me on my toes the whole time.
This is my least favorite Eliot so far and I think there are only ...
This is my least favorite Eliot so far and I think there are only a few I haven't read. It didn't seem to go anywhere and the characters's action were frustrating. I've never grown bored with Eliot's philosophizing but it was heavy handed in Romola.
    A good read!
This is an amazing first novel. The writer's position in rural English society enabled close observation of the various social strata and of the individual characters in the story. So, readers are offered acute and detailed insights into a wide range of people and places, with touches of humour, and a gripping central plot with several fascinating sub-plots too - though perhaps the final outcomes may be rather unbelievable in some ways. The reader needs time! - the book was written in 1859, before TV etc, when copious time was available. And in the necessity of the time the female author used a male pseudonym, especially perhaps because of the subject matter, very controversial for the time - and despite her own perilous social status at the time.
