Perfect Poem For Freedom And Patriotism

What did you love best about England to Free Men?

The prose and rhyming of this poem are exquisite. Galsworthy was a master and it shows in the rhythm and cadence of this poem.

This poem, written from England to its fighting men, expresses a sort of patriotism which I doubt exist any longer. We have grown jaded and cynical, and a wholehearted love of country is seen as bizarre, even foolish.

Is that a good thing or bad? There are two sides to it, I suppose, but it does show a time in which such emotions were the norm.

The narration was superb. My wife and I listened to it together. Mr. Mather's voice has the gravitas this poem deserves.

What other book might you compare England to Free Men to and why?

I listened to "In Flanders Fields", read by the same narrator. It is also a war poem.

Have you listened to any of Phillip J. Mathers other performances before? How does this one compare?

This poem is superior in terms of prose and structure to other poems I've listened to. You can sense the mastery of Galsworthy in every line.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It is an emotional poem. I can imagine how it stirred men into battle and sacrifice.

Any additional comments?

I will seek more of Mr. Galsworhty's work based on this poem.

A medieval tale of the trial of a werewolf in southern France.

A strange wandering beggar-boy meets a group of French girls who are tending their flocks. He frightens the girls with dreadful stories of souls in Hell and explains that he is a werewolf and describes how at night he ravages the country and devours sheep and children. The boy is arrested and brought before the courts. His testimony is alarmingly frank and astonishingly well corroborated by the evidence of other witnesses.

Members Reviews:

not much. 30 mins of nothing

while the writing was good, this is hardly worth more than a dollar. not much of a story or even a distraction.

A strange story strangely done

How could the performance have been better?

They could have the narrator drop the fake French accent. That was terrible, and made it very difficult to understand. At first I wondered if that was really the way the narrator spoke, but after finding a few other books that she narrated, no, she just tries to force accents to fit each book she narrates. The other book was a seafaring one, and she was trying to do a pirate accent for that one.

Did Jean Grenier - The French Werewolf inspire you to do anything?

I hope not. It's a book about an insane kid attacking and trying to eat other children.

Any additional comments?

Basically it's just a short story about a curiosity during medieval times. An interesting story, but not really educational or anything.

Great present for grandfather

I bought this book for my father who has just retired. It is a touching book with beautiful illustrations. My daughter enjoyed it but I think that it is a children's book that an adult would appreciate more than a child. If you are looking for a touching book to give your father-grandfather I would recomend this book.

Title: Odd Fish

Subtitle: Being a Casual Selection of London Residents

Author: Stacy Aumonier

Narrator: Cathy Dobson

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 57 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-27-14

Publisher: Red Door Audiobooks

Genres: Classics, British Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Stacy Aumonier was described by John Galsworthy as "one of the best short-story writers of all time". Odd Fish gives a keen insight into why the Nobel Prize winner believed Aumonier would outlive the writers of his day. In this collection of sketches of London Characters, Aumonier amply exhibits his genius for characterisation, his keen wit and his ruthless ascerbity.

From reluctant fishmongers to opulent ballad singers with a shameful secret, drunks and scoundrals to eccentrics and geniuses, Aumonier sketches his characters from life and portays them as real, credible, rounded individuals, gradually unmasking them as though peeling the layers from an onion. Superb!
