Publisher's Summary:

Set against the gorgeous backdrop of the Gulf of Mexico, The Shark Club is a bittersweet story about the power of forgiveness and the promise of true love, from Ann Kidd Taylor, the New York Times best-selling coauthor of the memoir Travelling with Pomegranates, sure to appeal to fans of Nicholas Sparks and Jojo Moyes.

On a summer day in 1988, two extraordinary things happen to 12-year-old Maeve Donnelly. First, she is kissed by Daniel, the boy of her dreams. Then, she is attacked by a blacktip shark.

Eighteen years later Maeve is a world-travelling marine biologist studying and swimming with the very animals that once threatened her life. Maeve is fearless in the water. On land, however, Maeve is haunted by painful memories and indecisive about the path her life will take. When she returns to her childhood home on the small island off Florida's coast where she grew up, she finds that her twin brother may be about to make it big as novelist, using her love life as his jumping-off point. Will she confront her feelings about her brother's betrayal - and forgive her childhood sweetheart, Daniel, the missteps of their youth? Or will she dive headlong back into her research and open her heart to Nicholas, the handsome colleague who shares her passion for the ocean?

Strong female lead and smart

Good story of a strong woman who stands her ground. Interesting shark info and I enjoyed it all. The characters were well developed and believable. A little surprise at the end. A well-written romance.

sharks

This book features a strong female not afraid to stand for what she believes in, never backing down. The story is a good vehicle for her to find her way.

Good, quick read

Read for a book club. Liked the character development and how the story played out.

Wonderful story

Ive always loved the ocean and sharks. What a wonderful way to show the vulnerability of these awesome creatures and what dedicated researchers will do to keep them safe.

didn't end like I wanted

Language: English

Release date: 04-20-17

Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

When Will - soon to be known as 'Posh Lad' - starts as an apprentice for Stanley Lampitt, he expects horses, fresh air and a solid training in forge-work and horses. What he gets is Stanley, 'six-foot-six of tattooed muscle, with a gleaming shaven head', and Ewan, raised at the bad end of the Cribbs Estate. It's a baptism of fire. After a rocky start - Will doesn't drink Yorkshire tea - the three settle into a rhythm, barrelling around Yorkshire in a series of dodgy vans, forging iron and shoeing horses. Whether it's dealing with Stan's dog Lucky - the Jack Russell with the heart and soul of a serial killer - or a 17-hands stallion aptly named Earthquake, Will learns his lessons the hard way, all the while ensuring Stan and Ewan don't catch on to his phobia of chickens....

With a cast of rich Arabs, stingy old ladies, ex-footballers, gypsies, glamorous polo wives and a host of different horses, a few donkeys and the odd llama, together they navigate the highs and lows of romantic entanglements, swarms of bees, combustible chickens and daily pranks. And by the end of the year, 'Posh Lad' has learnt a whole lot more than what it is to be a good blacksmith....

Publisher's Summary:

Heathcote, England, 1984. A mysterious figure is sneaking into homes through backdoors and open windows. Known locally as 'the Fox', he knows everything about everyone, leaving curious objects in their homes or taking things from them.

When beloved Anna disappears, everyone believes the Fox is responsible. For the villagers, finding Anna will be difficult - but stopping the Fox from exposing their darkest secrets might just be impossible.

Members Reviews:

Outstanding debut novel

Would you listen to We All Begin as Strangers again? Why?

I would listen to this novel again just to absorb the level of fine detail Harriet Cummings weaved through this tale. It had excellent character studies and story twists that had me wanting more. The conclusion was unexpected but spot on.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's difficult to chose a favourite character because they were all so well rounded and real.

Which character as performed by Rachel Atkins was your favourite?

Rachel Atkins voiced each character with just the right amount of deviation so you new exactly who it was even before the narrative told you so. And again, to pick a favourite would be impossible.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I couldn't and didn't read it in one sitting. Which I felt was a good thing as it gave me time to digest each segment. Which I then eagerly looked forward to the next instalment.

Any additional comments?

This book reminded me of A Casual Vacancy. By JK Rowling with it's view of not quite so quaint village life. That was a book I thoroughly enjoyed, but this I felt equaled it. So I feel to compare Harriet Cummings to the most successful author of our age is a worthy and deserved accolade.

Exploring life behind Heathcote's closed curtains

I really enjoyed this, Harriet Cummings's first novel. It's set in the year of her birth 1984 when there was a true case of an intruder who was entering people's houses, leaving objects and taking others. The community here is Heathcote, frightened and upset by a series of intrusions into people's homes. The villagers call the intruder The Fox and as his unsettling visits continue and he seems to know things kept hidden about them, they become suspicious of one another and personal relationships are under strain.

Little by little, the unsatisfactory inner lives and intimacies of the various villagers are presented with all their human weaknesses and disappointments. Cummings has researched the 1980s background beautifully so that it rings absolutely true in all the many details, from social values to the details of the interior of the villagers' houses, what they eat and where they shop. Heathcote itself is created so that you can imagine the lanes and streets in which live these unassuming people whose lives Cummings makes increasingly engaging and complex the deeper she delves.

The heart of the story which reveals the identity of The Fox is dark and tragic and discovered only after much-loved, faithful church-goer Anna goes missing, but what makes this novel refreshing and unusual is that the whole is gentle and kind so that the focus is on these quiet and kind lives temporarily derailed by the threat posed by the perplexing presence of The Fox.

The narration added a great deal to my enjoyment. Rachel Atkins brought out the subtleties of each character and was particularly good on dialogue.

Title: Miss You

Subtitle: A Novel

Author: Kate Eberlen

Narrator: Anna Acton, Finlay Robertson

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 10 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-04-17

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Ltd

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

A wryly romantic debut novel with echoes of One Day that asks: What if you just walked by the love of your life but didn't even know it?

"Today is the first day of the rest of your life." Tess can't get the motto from her mother's kitchen knickknack out of her head, even though she's in Florence on an idyllic vacation before starting university in London.

Gus is also visiting Florence, on a holiday with his parents seven months after tragedy shattered their lives. Headed to medical school in London, he's trying to be a dutiful son but longs to escape and discover who he really is.

A chance meeting brings these 18-year-olds together for a brief moment - the first of many times their paths will crisscross as time passes and their lives diverge from those they'd envisioned. Over the course of the next 16 years, Tess and Gus will face very different challenges and choices. Separated by distance and circumstance, the possibility of these two connecting once more seems slight.

But while fate can separate two people, it can also bring them back together again....

Members Reviews:

Excellent, gripping

A book that keeps you right on your toes, absolutely to the very end. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I felt that there could have been more commonalities to make this relationship feel more believable.

The question that is raised in Miss You is this, is it possible to find a forever soulmate? The book begins with Tess and Guss as 18 year olds on vacation in Italy. A chance (serendipitous?) meeting over gelato is the first of many chance meetings over the next sixteen years.

Both Tess and Guss live very contrasting lifestyles that take them in different directions, including exhausting and unhappy relationships and their subsequent emotional rollercoasters. The threads of their lives imperceptibly intercept along those journeys but never seem to truly connect. Both feel unfulfilled as they put the needs of others ahead of their own, including Tess's devotion to her much younger sister who has Asperger Syndrome.

Did I like this story. Hard to say. Despite a whopping 433 pages of text, I found it hard to really determine what Tess and Guss really wanted out of life. After struggling through numerous painful relationships, I found that story simply ran out of steam and the ending felt rushed and contrived. Not a fan of "insta-love" stories, I felt that there could have been more commonalities to make this relationship feel more believable.
