Publisher's Summary:
Stephen Daisleys astonishing debut novel is a story of war and of love - how each changes everything, forever. Traitor is that rarest of things: a work of fiction that will transport the listener, heart and soul, into another realm.
What would make a soldier betray his country?
In the battle-smoke and chaos of Gallipoli, a young New Zealand soldier helps a Turkish doctor fighting to save a boys life. Then a shell bursts nearby; the blast that should have killed them both consigns them instead to the same military hospital.
Mahmoud is a Sufi. A whirling dervish, he says, of the Mevlevi order. He tells David stories. Of arriving in London with a pocketful of dried apricots. Of Majnun, the man mad for love, and of the saint who flew to paradise on a lion skin. You are God, we are all gods, Mahmoud tells David; and a bond grows between them.
A bond so strong that David will betray his country for his friend.
Critic Reviews:
"Daisleys Traitor is suffused with love, beauty and loneliness. The creation and development of the character of David Monroe is masterful, not least because he is a man of so few words." (Australian Literary Review)
"Stephen Daisleys Traitor is one of the finest debut novels I have read. Indeed its one of the best novels I have read in recent years." (The Australian)

I read this book when it was first published, ...
I read this book when it was first published, and was reminded of it when I saw a tv programme that talked about âwhirlingâ.
It is a story about a naive young New Zealand man who went to fight at Gallipoli. After Gallipoli he helped an injured muslim Turk to escape, an effort which resulted in their both being sent to camps in different theatres, and in his being charged with desertion. He served on the front lines in France as an stretcher bearer. They never met again, but the influence of the Turk shaped his life ever after.
This is a reflective story of a man at peace with himself and accepting of life as it unravels with only fleeting regrets.
I found it extraordinarily satisfying.
Please please read this breathtakingly excellent book.
A story of the universe and the tiny specks of humanity who are part of it. A story of loss and grief and joy which lasts lifetimes.
Poor production values very annoying
Will update this review if I get to the end of the book - I write "if" because the production values are driving me crazy. In most instances of an "l" following an "f" a space had been inserted. For example "He sat there and studied the colours of the f lame.", "he could see himself ref lected in the glass.", and many more.
with great sensitivity and thoughtful insight
Superbly written, with great sensitivity and thoughtful insight.
Five Stars
One of the best books I have read for a long time!
