Meet Akhila: 45 and single, an income-tax clerk, and a woman who has never been allowed to live her own life - always the daughter, the sister, the aunt, the provider - until the day she gets herself a one-way ticket to the seaside town of Kanyakumari. In the intimate atmosphere of the all-women sleeping car - the 'Ladies Coupe' - Akhila asks the five women the question that has been haunting her all her adult life: can a woman stay single and be happy, or does she need a man to feel complete?
This wonderfully atmospheric, deliciously warm novel takes the listener into the heart of women's lives in contemporary India, revealing how the dilemmas that women face in their relationships with hunsbands, mothers, friends, employers and children are the same world over.

Akila - A Trendsetting Modern Woman
This novel about Akila's life was engrossing, and the path she travels and the decision she takes were masterfully portrayed by Anita Nair in her own way. Being from Madras, this novel is more closer to my heart as she travels the roads of Ambattur, the train travels, bus travel to office in Nungambakkam. the recipes of Murukku, Cheedai, etc. just made me reminisce by older days when my grandma used to do lot of eateries during weekends, holidays, and festivals. Also, the other characters, Akila's family and friends, were well etched. Overall, it's a nice read with some heavy plots at the end of the novel, like one that of Marikolunthu's characters had a great impact on me. Also, not to forget the scene of Akila's father's demise and how she takes the burden in her shoulder as a family woman just made me cry. A BIG THUMBS-UP.
This was a terrific story to read
This was a terrific story to read. It is well written and certainly has the air of truth in it.
I bought the book in French and gave it to my wife who also enjoyed this book.
She has passed it on to other members of her family and pretty much everyone feels
the same about the book as it is one of those books that we all were glad to have read.
Great Read!
I am not the most famaliar person with Indian culture, what I do know is from Slumdog Millionaire, one or two travel books and talking with a few. I absolutely enjoyed this book, and it was very easy to follow thru the day to day Indian culture, and it was very educating.
This book was also a literary joy to read, its funny, heartfelt and explains all battles that women face with themselves, society stereotypes, and what other people expect of them. Of course not every person in the book has a happy story, which is sort of refreshing. When I read this book, I kept thinking of the old Thousand and One Arabian Nights book, the style and rhythm was very similiar.
A promising start with a lost middle and trying to please end.
The Book offers a promising start, but in the middle, the reader(me) gets lost in the excessive and un-chronological narration of the co-passengers. Gladly, the end again goes back to the lead person and her life, without leaving it in the middle. It might be a good book but I certainly don't think it's the best book I ever read on women!
The ladies coupe book review
This was a beautifully-written thoroughly engrossing story of Indian women from different socio-economic and religious backgrounds who share their life stories on an overnight train journey.
