  • Tourism Business Insights with Adnams and Banham Zoo, recorded LIVE!

This is a special cross-over episode with our other series, Tourism Business Chat.

The Tourism Business Survey was relaunched for 2023, after a 'COVID-19 break' and the results were announced at a seminar on 25 April to an audience of sector leaders. We recorded the panel discussions for listeners to enjoy who were unable to attend on the day.

Valerie Watson-Brown from the Visitor Economy Network Initiative provided detail on the work of this innovative project driving careers in the sector, and you can also hear questions from the audience there on the day.

This is the perfect accompaniment to the full survey brochure which you can download here. The brochure has the full results of the survey, and insightful commentary from leading businesses including Holkham Hall, ROARR! and many more. Many thanks to sponsors Adnams, Lloyds Bank, Swiss Camplings and insight6

Tax experts Gilly McGill and Dominic Carter discuss what the term covers – commonly known as 'one-to-many letters' and how HMRC identify recipients through data submitted to them or issues common to a sector. They discuss how the decline in human resourcing to investigate impacts this process.

They provide recent examples of problems HMRC have faced and the potential penalties that may come from ignoring these letters, and how your adviser can help.

  • HMRC Penalties – what do you need to know?

VAT director Gillian McGill and tax partner Dominic Carter discuss recent tax headlines as well as changes in the new VAT penalty regime.

The previous regime wasn't flexible, with harsh penalties for late VAT returns and payments, often disputed in court, but the new system which came into effect on 1 January, launched with seemingly positive changes.

They discuss the concept of 'reasonable care' that HMRC can use to reduce the level of penalties applied by HMRC and how this is still open to interpretation. They also provide some practical tips for managing errors in your organisation.

  • 4. 'Fiscal drag' – a post Budget observation

VAT Director Gilly McGill was a little disheartened after the Autumn Statement, as she initially thought the revisions on VAT were lacking. However, a post budget discussion with Tax Partner Dominic Carter brought the impact of fiscal drag to the table which, on closer inspection, will have implications across all taxes. In this episode they discuss inflationary impact, the increase in businesses brought into VAT registration, Capital Goods Scheme reporting, Making Tax Digital and, ultimately, what the impact of fiscal drag means for the level of tax paid by businesses and individuals.
