She is the first African American woman to anchor a nightly newscast in Cleveland, and the first solo anchor of a weeknight newscast in that city. She is a member of the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and is an eight-time recipient of the Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards.

Norm N. Nite is the author of the Rock On: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock N' Roll book series. Nite began his career as a disk jockey at WGAR (AM) in Cleveland and later at WMJI there. He went on to host shows at WCBS-FM and WNBC in New York City. Nite's historical interest in Rock & Roll led him to compile, as the first volume of "Rock On" describes it, "an exhaustive array of data on more than 1,000 of the most popular artists of the fifties and early sixties.

He has lectured at law schools across the country on federal civil rights law and has appeared as an expert on civil and constitutional rights before both the Senate and the House of Representatives in Washington. Avery has received the Legendary Champion of Civil Rights Award by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Freedom Award by the NAACP, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Human Rights Award.
