He has lectured at law schools across the country on federal civil rights law and has appeared as an expert on civil and constitutional rights before both the Senate and the House of Representatives in Washington. Avery has received the Legendary Champion of Civil Rights Award by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Freedom Award by the NAACP, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Human Rights Award.
